19-year-old Western Michigan University freshman Joey Metzelaars died Wednesday in Holland, Michigan. Metzelaars played for the Western Michgan University Men's Lacrosse team during the Fall 2007 season. He declined a Spring roster position this season with the intention of joining the Spring team in 2009 after adjusting to college life. He is suspected to have died from bacterial meningitis, but an autopsy and follow-up laboratory tests were inconclusive in pinpointing the cause of death. According to a press release, the symptoms displayed by the student prior to his death were consistent with those of bacterial meningitis.
This is truly a sad day for the lacrosse community. Joey was a young man of tremendous class, maturity, and kindness. Please include the Metzelaars familty in your thoughts and prayers during this time of crisis.

Tragedy
On behalf of the entire lacrosse team at the University of Minnesota, we want to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences on the loss of this young man. What an incredibly unfortunate situation for everyone involved. From our hearts to yours, we are truly sorry to hear this news. Our thoughts and prayers are with Joey, his family and his teammates in this difficult time.
