Quote:
calpoly does not deserve that spot in my opinion because they have not beaten anyone significant

Using your own logic who should be in front of them? The teams behind them seem to be beating up on each other but haven't beaten anyone significant, with Georgia beating FSU the exception. I think they are right where they need to be. They should be ahead of the teams behind them, but should be behind the teams in front of them. They are not going to have a stellar record but they have one of the toughest schedules in the nation (top 5 laxpower SOS). The loss to Colorado was not good but I just dont think the teams behind them are better in comparison.

i think an argument that boston college could be placed at the 13 spot. with two respectable losses to two t5 teams, csu by 2 and umd by 5, they show much more promise than poly who just got tossed around by 12CU. and this is early in the season for bc, as opposed to more than half way for poly

Like was said earlier, the voters didn't know the outcome of the CU/Poly game until after the votes were due. I think that would change Poly's spot, but CU would stay 12 but move much closers in points earned in the poll.

So with UCSB's 2 losses in Florida, do people think that the SELC is better than everyone thought, or that UCSB is worse?

It would appear that UCSB is worse than thought, right now. Florida & FSU are probably rated about right. Lots to go in this season yet.

I don't know, I mean I would move SB down a little, but I would probably put UF more in the 14-15 range.

People will not give credit to anyone in the SELC or any other conference until they have done something in the tournament. Even then a single team might get some credit, and not the entire conference.

PNWLaxer, of those ~90 OOC games, how many were outside of the WCLL region?

For a team located in a state that is about to allow us only our second outdoor practice today, location and facilites are a key factor.

The WCLL teams have undoubtedly made the most of their location.

I'll amend my post as well. Impressed the WCLL teams are travelling more!

UCSB does not have the depth they have shown in the past. They beat USC by 2 in the last minutes of the game.

You are correct drsocallax...I think UCSB has some real quality players at every position, but they do not have the depth of years past. Especially after the 1st line the middies are not what they used to be.
I had a sickly feeling after watching them play UCLA and USC that they were not going to do much this year, but I think they are a team that has a lot of room for improvement and will continue to make adjustments as the season progresses. I actually expected the Claremont @ UCSB game to be much closer than it was. The Cougars are a very solid team. Credit to UCSB in in that one. Furthermore, I was very impressed with Florida when they were out here, very athletic and real solid sticks....not what I expected at all (in a good way!)

All this makes for a VERY exciting last few weeks of NCAA Basket...errr WCLL regular season games! Can't wait to see some of these play out.

Just for fun...here is my new WCLL top 10 (p.s. I have not seen Sonoma, Santa Clara or Cal Poly this year, but many teams I have seen 2-3 times)

1.Chapman
2.Arizona State
These 2 stick out more than any others
3.Loyola Marymount
4.Sonoma State (?)
5.UCSB
6.Stanford
7.Claremont Colleges
8.Santa Clara (?)
9.Cal Poly (?)
10.SDSU

Just quickly looking at it...wouldnt this mean that a teams that SB beat, like cal poly and Stanford, arent quite what the voters thought?

Poly is ranked ahead of Florida, but lost to SB by 6, and their wins over Northeastern and Arizona arent looking so great as the season progresses....Along the same lines, Stanford is ranked just behind Florida, but lost to SB by 5, and they havent really beaten anyone else this year (besides NU, who appears to be struggling after some serious losses due to graduation).

I really think these couple games speak to the relative strength of the WCLL and the SELC. I think a team like Chapman or sonoma deserves to be talked about in the top tier, but I think the rest of the WCLL still has something to prove. Really, what has a team like ASU done to be put up there? I dont think there is such a great gap between the WCLL and the rest of the MCLA as some of the people on this board would like you to believe.

As much as I hate congratulating the Gators, thats another huge win for the SELC. Would it kill someone from the west coast to say.....Gee, maybe UCSB is overrated and the Florida schools are a bit underrated.

If either of the games had gone the other way 7-6, 10-8 in favor of UCSB, west coasters would be glorified by the continued WCLL dominance. Give me a break.

I guess I will have to come to UCSB's defense as much as I can. As someone who has seen a lot of their games this year, they seem to have two teams. The good one and the bad one. They seem to play down to their opponents a lot. That is something that happens a lot with young teams. A third of their starters are freshmen with only three seniors. I do think EvanFSU is right. FSU is better than people thought, and Florida might be better as well. UCSB has come back to have successful seasons after worse losses. You can't count them out quite yet. They have a very tough last four regular season games. They play Sonoma and ASU Saturday and Sunday of next weekend. Then Chapman the following weekend. And for the final game, they play LMU. They have a tough road, but can finish off the regular season with some quality wins to slingshot themselves into playoffs.

I did say that UCSB was overrated right now. I don't agree with the second part of your statement because, while the UCSB win is a nice one for the Gators, they still have the LMU loss on their resume and those, IMO, tend to offset them. I think they are rated about right.........which is what I said.
