Post-Game Fight Songs

I'm sure that this was not planned by the UGA squad, but that the song was played by someone up in the booth.

I'd like to say that this demonstrates either extremely poor judgement, incredible ignorance, and/or horrible sportsmanship.

Is this thread really happening? Am I actually reading this drivel? Lets look- USLIA players are generally 18-22 years old. I happened to be 29 when I played in the league, but thats beside the point. 18-22 years old, in other words, grown freakin' men. Dry your tears little one, it is just a game, and one helluva a game a that. If someone had spit in the face of a Tech or UGA player, that would merit a gripe but it is A SONG played after A GAME. Catching the drift here? Grow up. There are bigger fish to fry in this world and your post is, in my opinion, a waste of bandwidth.
Do you want to talk about sportsmanship? Well I drug my old sportsmanship handbook and I just couldn't find the page where it talked about boohoo-ing after a loss because you didn't like the announcer's music selection. I did, however, find the page where it talked about taking your lumps with dignity and keeping your mouth shut. I'll make you a copy if you would like.
The game Lacrosse has always been played by warriors. Since its inception, men have lived and died on these fields. my suggestion to you is to do some reading. Read about the Iroquois and the fierceness with which the undertook these contests. Read about the Cherokee and the extensive pregame purification rituals that those players underwent. ( there is an excellent example of this in a book called "The Trail of Tears- The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee nation" by John Ehle.)It is not for the meek, I assure you of that. After you have done this reading, take a moment and reflect upon the roots of this contest and you will see why I view this thread as an affront to the game and its traditions.

I think your digging a little to deep here, I was just stating as to how some people felt that day and why it was a problem. But im sure in that book there was no mention of any sort of respect, and after they won they went and did a rain dance on the losers front lawn. People asked about how people felt about it, and I was responding to it. We didnt strike up the band when we beat UGA for the past 3 years as we respected them as an opponent and thanked them for being a part of a tradition. I know that UGA had no part and I dont blame anyone, it was a mistake by a parent that is being blown up. At 29 you should probably be working instead of trying to sound intellegent by quoting books on a lacrosse board.

GTLaxCaptain21- The fact that I played at this level at the age of 29, should tell you a little something about me. The reason that I was so late in getting to college is because I spent the good years of my life in the US Marines, serving in the infantry, as well as playing lacrosse for the Camp Lejeune lacrosse team. It also wouldn't hurt you to know that I was one of the founding members of the very first high school lacrosse team in this state, at Darlington in 1990. That pretty much means that I started playing this game while you were still coloring with the fat crayons. We didn't win a single game that season, but we didn't cry when we lost either. And we were in high school. As for quoting books, I am already a published writer and archaeologist, working on my MBA while working 50+ hours a week at a law firm. I keep track of this board because I am one of the reasons, albeit a small one, that lacrosse exists in this state at the level that it does today. I have also played an integral role in the formulation of new high school and middle school programs in Georgia by volunteering my time and knowledge to serve as an interim coach until permanent replacements could be found. My credentials speak for themselves just as your attitude on this issue speaks for you. Your comments directed towards my knowledge are neither correct nor warranted and should be viewed as a baseless attempt to lash out at someone who is trying to do you favor. I am not saying anyone is right or anyone is wrong in the playing of the song. Probably shouldnt have been done, granted- but you and all of your ilk seem to think that everyone should be considerate of your feelings. Wake up - life doesn't work that way. Your best bet is to suck it up, toughen up, and dont let it phase you- if you cant do that, you are in for a tough road.

As for respecting UGA as an opponent- dont paint your halo on just yet. Your team talked more trash than just about any other team I ever played against. When you beat us in Athens and then went and huddled up and did your little dance on our G in the middle of the field- did anybody cry about that? Nope. We watched it and as much as we HATED it, we knew we got beat. We went home and started working harder and now you see the results. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, all of a sudden there is a problem.

For the proper way to respond to such occurences in the future, see the post by laxbum. Just play your best game and the rest of it be danged. That is what a team captain, a leader, tells his team. At the close of that game, I was thinking that both teams played one hell of a game. Now I just think you are a sore loser and I have forgotten all about what tight competition it was.

What year was this? I don't remember this at all if it was recently. The only game in Athens we won in the past 5 years we played pretty poorly and were definitely not dancing on the G after the game. I know it's something the coaches and captains wouldn't stand for at all.

Apologies for the misunderstanding. "Dance" was a figurative term in this instance. Post game, Tech held their huddle and cheer while standing on top of our G. The game was in 2003 and the score was 13-3. It may have been poorly played in your opinion, but it was pretty much a whipping.

I have gotten way off topic here, addressing comments that I found to be uninformed and personal in nature. The song being played is a non issue and, as laxbum and georgia lacrosse said, one person bringing it up takes away from the intense competition that took place in the game. It makes Tech look like sore losers, which I am sure most of the team is not.

I am a UGA alum and was very proud to see them do so well in this tournament. When I was there, we got bumped down to Division B. That was hard to take but we didn't let it phase us. Two years removed from that, UGA has become a factor in this league and I laud them for that. To see this victory have any sort of stigma surrounding it, especially one brought up by a player from the opposing team when UGA players had nothing to do with it, stinks as it this victory was the result of hard work and nothing else.

The thing that really got me is that post game, the UGA staff apologized even though they had nothing to do with it. Yet this thread was started anyway and contained the phrase "poor sportsmanship." The fact that the staff apoloigized for something they had nothing to do with is indicative of a very high level of sportsmanship, and not a poor one as cheileger would have the board believe. Sportsmanship is defined as "Conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit, and grace in losing," with the operative phrase here being "befitting participants." All of the elements of that definition apply to the players on the field. Rowdy fans and PA operators do not fall under the umbrella of sportsmanship. It was known by cheiliger, by his own admission, that the UGA players and staff had nothing to do with the playing of that song. It is therefore a non-issue and should not have been brought up in the first place. It reeks of sour grapes and a poor attitude which, again, I am sure does not reflect the feelings of the Georgia Tech players as a whole nor its coaching staff. It should have never even been brought up.

Alright guys, let's put it to rest please. We all know how Tech guys and UGA guys feel about the song thing now. Let it go. Even some of my involved and close friend alum; we need to drop it and move on.

It was a great weekend of lacrosse all across the board and the staff that put on the event did an excellent job. Maybe next year we can have a dome though- what was up with the Atl weather this past weekend??!! :?

I was the first person who said something to the tourney director when I heard the song (before we shook hands) and he handled it quickly recognizing the err in judgement by the booth. They apologized, enough said.

As for Tech though "Ron Mexico"- I hope you have something to back up this "worst trash talkers" line. I was at that game as well and nothing of the sort took place. In fact we packed up as quickly as possible and got back on the bus cause it was Easter weekend and my wife was waiting for me on I-85 to head to NC to spend the weekend with her family. There was no dancing and no trash talking. I pride our guys on the fact that we do not get into that sort of thing. I feel confident that other teams, players and coaches will back that up. I was good friends with your former coach and would never have done to that them or the school. I repsect the rivalry- good games at times, bad games at times, but still a good rivalry. Heck, the last few years its seems to be the only thing tech had won over UGA!

Sonny- close the door on this.... we are going in circles. Congrats to UGA on a good win.

GT has been the model of class in the SELC since i have been involved with the league.

Also it was FSU on Florida's 50 yard line in the pre-game warmup scrap most recently.

Although my fondest memory of a 50 yard line scuffle was in tallahassee when the teams broke out in a riot and Doug Johnson stayed out of it and chucked a ball at Bobby Bowden.

That should shut down this topic now.
