Final Div B Poll

Postby cjwilhelmi on Sat Apr 29, 2006 11:36 pm

Ok so I am so confused about how to do my poll. I have the first 3 or 4 spots pretty easily but I have no idea about the rest of them.

The best I can tell here is what happened in each conference tournament (rankings included). Just so that everything is in one place for the pollsters.

GRLC

Harding (#7) lost to Augustana (#24)
Creighton(#19) defeated Dordt (#23)

Finals: Creighton verses Augustana

SELC

Elon (13) defeated SCAD
Eckerd (8) defeated App State

Finals: Eckerd defeated Elon

RMLC

I cant find who the semi parings were, can someone inform me.

Finals: UVSC (4) defeated UNC (10)

EDIT::: WILL FINISH ON SUNDAY

Now this makes things very interesting. Apparently Augustana has been highly underrated. It could be argued that they should have been a top team the entire season being ranked somewhere between 6 and 14, not the lowly 24 they now enjoy. Augustana finished the season 11-1 with the only loss being to St. Louis University by 1. They are a very good team and should have been ranked much higher than they currently are.

Why are they so underranked?

Probably because they have not been as challenged as USD, UST, Claremont, UVSC and so forth because of not playing OOC games. The reality of the situation is that they are that good and none of us knew it. Crap on us, we didn't believe.

Augustana, welcome to the minds of Div B Pollsters, hopefully the next poll will put you were you should be.

This is my ROUGH estimate for the tournament seedings. Im probably way off and screwed up somewhere but im sure someone will help me change it.

I do have Large bias with UST and SJU but i feel what SJU did at the begining of the year (only team to beat USD, beat UST) and what UST did today should place them and us above UVSC. I have no idea about Salem state.

?? - Salem State AQ

1. San Diego
2. Claremont College
3. Saint Thomas
4. Saint Johns University
5. Utah Valley State College
6. Montana
7. Eckerd College
8. Calvin College
9. Northern Colorado
10. Augustana College
11. Southwestern University
12. Salem State

Northern Colorado edge over Harding
based on:

Top 10 teams played
UNC 3 Regular Season 1 Postseason (#1, #2, #4 and #4 in Championship)
Harding 1 Regular Season (#5 Regular Season)
Top 25 Teams Played
UNC 6 Regular Season and 2 Postseason (#1, #2, #4, #11, #12, #25 and #11 in semi-final, #4 in championship)
Harding 4 Regular Season 1 Postseason (#5, #16, #19, #23, and #24 in semi-final)
Postseason
UNC beat #11 in semi-final and lost by 2 to #4 in Championship
Harding lost to #24 in semi-final; did not reach championship
Both teams had a good season but reaching a Championship game in the playoffs (by beating a #11 seed in the semis) should give at least a little advantage

I am obviously a little biased towards UNC but based on the info above I feel like Northern Colorado is justified in taking the last At-Large Bid

Either way we'll have to wait until tomorrow night. Best wishes and good luck to everyone.

My top ten
1. USD
2. Claremont
3. Saint Thomas
4. Utah Valley State
5. Saint Johns
6. Montana
7. Augustana
8. Eckered
9. Calvin
10. Harding
11. Southerwestern
12. Salem State

Based on this afternoons events, I believe that the number one spot is truly up for grabs for USD, Claremont, UST, and Utah Valley State. All the teams have one lost and have played tough OOC games, Saint Thomas played Calvin, Ferris, Dordt, Harding, Creighton and was 5-0. Saint Thomas beat SJU who beat USD but lost to Claremont who lost to USD. All the top teams have lost 1 game but all to top 5 competitors. Saint Thomas deserves the number 3 seed for sure but as for the one and two spots, I would imagine USD would have a little leverage over Claremont since they beat them twice. Minnesota and California both will pull two teams from their states, does this mean Minnesota and California are the hot spots for college lacrosse? This shows how well Minnesota lacrosse plays (including University of Minnesota Duluth) and should be a exiting and interesting week in Texas.

Ok to play devils advocate...

Yes UNC played 3 teams (1 twice) in the top 10: 0 Wins

Geographically its easier for UNC to play top ranked teams than for anyone east of the RMLC. Put to brag about playing top ten teams with 0 Wins is just plain pointless. Congratulations to you for coming up with an impressive schedule and challenging yourself but lets talk about wins.

Against Top 25 Competition

UNC went 4-4
Harding went 3-2

In Conference Tournament

UNC defeated a #11 team and lost to #4
Harding lost to #24, a team that has only one loss and is vastly underrated. Augustana legitimately should be a top ten team. Its just too bad that they didn't schedule aggressively enough to be noticed nationally.
