Blu-ray vs HD DVD

Just read about Blockbuster's decision to go with Blu-Ray format because it discovered that its consumers prefer Blu-Ray discs. What is the difference between Blu-Ray and HD DVD? Does that mean most of us would have to get new players if we were to use either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?

This will be as much of a cluster as the VHS vs Beta faceoff many years ago. I can't believe that they are following the same path to folly. Until they decide on a standard for HD DVD's this is going to be a mess of formats. Sony must be looking to get revenge for having it's superior Beta format relegated to the trash bin of history.
I'll wait to see how things shake out before investing - I wonder if they can make players that will accept both formats?

The real question is will the adult film industry have as much impact on this decision as they did on VHS/Beta.

I think some things should not be in High Def

Another huge factor in the decision making of choosing one over the other that PS3 in Blu Ray and Xbox 360 in HD DVD...

i know they came out with a player that does play both, couldnt find it online right now but i saw it on Today show.

Each format has its own heavyweight industry backing. HD DVD is supported by Toshiba, Intel, and Microsoft. Blu-ray is supported by Samsung, Pioneer, and Sony.
