Games for 3/9 - 3/15: Predict, discuss, report scores here

I never thought we would have someone complain about playing at a venue like that, but I guess you have to do whatever needed to win......too bad it didn't work. I guess we just need to invite teams that are just excited to play on an amazing field for our stadium games.

If a field doesn't meet specs, the home team can file a field waiver for any alterable rule. Whether or not the visitors complain or even WANT to see the penalty assessed doesn't even matter! If there is no waiver and the field doesn't meet specs or isn't corrected before faceoff, it is up to the refs to assess the penalty. Period!

Your insinuations about PLU Coach Gutherless and the PNCLL as a whole not being excited to visit BSU are inappropriate. PLU and UPS spent the time and money to come to Boise to visit, did they not? Bubba is one of the classiest individuals I know, and would NEVER not agree to play on a field with football width or accept any reasonable field waiver. If Boise State got penalized for their field not meeting specs, my guess (without knowing all the facts yet of course) is that the refs did their job, and BSU should stop blaming the visitors.

Congrats to BSU on the win over PLU. Hopefully all goes well for the PSU game. Way to represent the RMLC well.

Dan, I in no way am trying to say anything negative about the PNCLL. I have a great respect for the teams in your conference. I don't know the PLU coach, but I do know that after the game both himself and some of the PLU players didn't have the "class" to shake our hands. I'm sure you have a different view of the PLU coach, but in my opinion he didn't represent his team or your league well in regards to sportsmanship. I'm sure that he was upset with the game but a coach needs to be a role model for his players. In regards to the PLU players, great game last night and I hope that we get a chance to play again.

Oh and in regards to how the penalty was called.....the refs came to our coach and told him that the visiting coach had a problem with the field. Just to set the record straight.

BSU vs. PLU

Postby Flanders on Sun Mar 13, 2005 7:40 pm

There was only one player from PLU that didn't have the "class" to shake the hands of the BSU players - it was me. It has nothing to do with trying to disrespect the BSU team in any way. There were factors involved that made this show of sportsmanship an impossibility for me to do. I apologize if this was taken in the wrong context. I also congratulate the BSU players on a game well played and again apologize to anybody that took my actions to be disrespectful.
Also, in clarification to the assessment of the 3 minute penalty - the field was 5 yards too long on either end of the field. The explaination we recieved was that this is a non-waiverable penalty by the head coach. Field width, on the other hand is waiverable. By rule, our coach could not have chosen to disregard this penalty since it was never his option to do so. The assessment and implementation of this penalty was made purely by the officials. By the way, I liked the turf - blue is my favorite color.

as this weekend closes i would like to congradulate uvsc on a great weekend. winning 3 straight games in three days is impressive....a great group of guys and thoroughly impressed with there sportsmanship and attitude towards the game of lacrosse in general. who ever comes out of the rmlc and goes to blaine i hope if it is not uvsc then the team going would show just as much respect and class in representing there league as uvsc. i can't say this was a great weekend for us coming home with two losses. i just hope that the teams we played realize that the pncll can bring some heat...although our record did not show it. i hope that if and when we meet the rmlc again it will be in a neutral unbias site and have a little more on the line than just a cross league match-up. BSU thank you for honoring us with the stadium.

I think a few things need to be cleared up here. First, you're right. . .one player and coach were not in line to shake hands with your team after the game. I had a player, who already replied to your post, who was so distraught after the tough loss that he was being consoled by Bubba during the hand-shaking portion of our evening. It was nothing overt or intentionally disrepectful, but a compassionate man taking care of his young player. For you to accuse this kid - a wonderful kid - of being a poor sportsman is truly inaccurate. If you really want to have "sportsmanship" discussions, I suggest you talk to your own teammate, #19 Jake Misner - who talked tons of unnecessary "smack" on the field to my players and our coaching staff.

As for the field problem, it had nothing to do with field width--as you suggested-- "a little narrow I believe." We have no problem playing on a football field and dealing with the width issues. We do it all of the time. Our problem was with the length of the field. At 120 yards, this is an unacceptable problem that can truly affect the outcome of a game. In our league, you are not allowed to "look the other way" - if a field doesn't meet distance requirements, it is a penalty.

For future reference, all you have to do is use the 45 yard line as midfield. Teams do it all of the time.

When PLU played the University of Washington earlier this year in a stadium, the field did not meet specs and we were penalized with a 3-minute unreleasable penalty. I did not blame the UW coaching staff - I blamed my own staff for not taking care of properly lining the field. I think your criticisms are unfounded and unfortunate.

We enjoyed our trip and appreciate Boise State hosting this 4-team interconference battle.

I think this topic is pretty much dead. Good weekend of games by all teams, but there is no need to discuss it any further.

Just by way of clarification; per the NCAA rulebook, field dimensions, both width and length, are items that can be waived if it is acceptable to both coaches.
"The administrative rules that may be altered by mutual consent of the
competing institutions are 1-2..."Playing Field SECTION 2. The playing field shall be rectangular, 110 yards long and 60 yards wide."

Attack box measurements should be done from the goal line out and from the midpoint of the field, so that you have 20 yds to the top of the box and a 40 yd width. The areas that may be affected would be from the wing areas to the sideline and the distance behind the goal.

I don't know if your leagues have any special bylaws regarding this point, that's just what the NCAA book states. It would be very unusual for an official to make a field dimension call on his own...

although i agree with the fact that this topic should come to a close, I want to say quickly that the lacrosse we (UVSC) experienced this weekend was amazing from all aspects. #11 on PLU was not only an amazing player, but about the nicest guy on the field I've played against. I can't say enough about PLU and their sportsmanship, and it all started with their coach.
Also, it was honestly an honor to play on Boise's "Smurf Turf" I've always wanted to play something there, you're so lucky you get to play home games in such an amazing place. thanks for a great weekend boise and we also look forward to seeing you in the playoffs.

Sorry for any misunderstandings over the weekend to all involved. Boise State is over the whole situation and I hope everyone else is as well. As far as UVSC goes.... our teams have had a pretty heated rivalry over the past five or six years but I must say that you guys have come a long ways in both your game and your sportsmanship. This years UVSC team is by far the best that I have faced, in regards to both your play and sportsmanship, over the past four years. Congrats on your success and I'm looking forward to getting another shot at you guys in the playoffs. Way to represent our conference this weekend.

I'm we've all gotten over it in the last 24 hours. I don't think anyone wants to hate anyone else, but I'm sure PLU, and UPS, can't wait to see you guys next year. The difference between style of play, officiating, tempo from league to league was interesting over the weekend. Obviously we didn't show up against UVSC and they killed us, so a look at our team and how we play was tough to see, but we played better against Boise. Someone made a comment about Boise' #19, that guy can shoot. I think he had 3-4 in their man-up, which absolutely was the difference in our game. We didn't stop their shooters in man down.

Different emphasis were kind of interesting to see.
