Vince Young

Postby laxfan25 on Wed Dec 06, 2006 6:32 pm

I know that after the Rose Bowl last year there was discussion about Vince Young and whether he would make it as a pro QB. I was one of the ones saying that he would be an All-Pro quarterback, and many others thought not. (The forum history doesn't go back far enough to resurrect the post and poll unfortunately).
While he's not there yet (All-Pro), can I get some props for the man? He had been terrific as a rookie thrown in there - 5-4 record with a couple of very big wins of late.
I like him, and think he will exceed Michael Vick in the QB hierarchy (granted that's not saying much!).

he definetly deserves praise for his play lately. but its obviously still reeeealll early. even vick has put together a few great games in a row. we forget vick made it all the way to the nfc title game in what seems like an eternity ago...

I for one thought he'd be terrible.

He's much more of a feel player than I thought he could pull off in the NFL. I do not believe in the running QB for the longterm, it's simply a young man's job, & we can't all stay young. I am a Titans & Jeff Fisher fan, but I've been pretty distant as I don't like VY. He's been successful when defenses are spread, or he's pushed out of the pocket. I still think the best way to contain him is to rush the line one way (think slant up on the TV)), & zone the LB's the other (think slant down on the TV)... I believe Chicago was the team doing it against Vick first, but I don't remember right now.

He's the best Rookie QB so far, but I don't think you'll be using his name in the same sentence as Leinhart in the future. I could be wrong, but its one season...

I like Vince Young... But please can I get some props for Romo? I know that he has been in the league for a couple years but he is giving me new hope in the Cowboys.

No no no...

Look at Vince Young's completitions vs. attempts, and his touchdowns/interceptions, and his passing yardage. This is not a Super Bowl calibre performance. He's basically playing well enough to get by and when coaches finally catchup to how to stop his legs (or Vince tears his ACL), he will struggle just like Vick (see Vick's injury history). And yes, laxfan, our bet still stands!

When is the praise for mobile quarterbacks going to subside? These guys can win easily at the high school level, moderately at the college level, and rarely in the professional level. Passing quarterbacks continue to dominate the professional league and yet my little nephews and step brothers think Michael Vick is a Super Bowl type quarterback. Not so fast...

Aah, but there you are wrong, grasshopper. Vince will be Young all of his life!!

Corbin, yes - props to Romo as well. He has revitalized the Cowboys season, which was heading south quickly with the highly immobile Bledsoe at the controls. Tony looks like he's having a blast out there as well.

This season, it looks like there is a bit of the changing of the guard and an infusion of new blood at the QB slot (although some of it may have been aging on the bench a couple seasons); Young, Reinart (Dan G, we'll have to wait for history on the head-to-head with VY), Romo, Philip Rivers (could be the best of them all), Alex Smith in SF, Jason Campbell getting a look in DC.

I think having a higly mobile, athletic QB is a definite plus in the NFL. Yes, you don't want them scrambling incessantly, but getting hit on a scramble isn't all that much different than the hits they take in the pocket. With the "slide" protection, they can avoid a lot of collisions, and the problems they cause for a defense are profound! If Vick actually had better passing skills he would be amazing. Not every pocket passer can be a Peyton Manning (i.e. Eli), and I think a QB that can run some is a very valuable commodity in the NFL. It can really dishearten a defense when they put on a great 3rd and long rush, and the little barstad scrambles for a 12 yard pickup.

You are right on about the slide protection. That really makes big running lanes for mobile quarterbacks. The coach who instituted that for the first time is hopefully making lots of money somewhere...

Nowadays it doesnt seem like there is a QB with a good mix of passing skills and mobile ability. There are QBs with great athleticism (Vick, Young) but lack the passing abilities of less mobile ones (P Manning) . Surprisingly Romo looked somewhat mobile the other day. Id say Jeff Garcia is "mobile" but he's so spastic in the pocket when I watch him I feel like Im going to have a seizure.

Was that Vince kicking too? The Titans are very close to 3-9 if their kicker doesn't boot it 60 yards and the Giants don't flatline.

I do think that he will have one advantage over Vick. Jeff Fisher is one of the best coaches in the league while Vick is stuck in Atlanta with a coach who is apparently in over his head. Of course, all Vince has to do is actually watch some game film and work on being a QUARTERBACK and he will surpass Vick in no time.

Compared to Vick or Vince, no he isnt. But moreso than the average pocket QB.

All of this talk reminds me of someone who is not exactly in the same league as Vince or Vick, but I have always enjoyed seeing those D-men having to huff and puff running after Fran Tarkenton with his patented scrambling all over the field. Wonder if the guys today can be able to stop Fran??

i can see the entire city of Houston throwing up a little in their collective mouths after VY destroys the Texans this weekend. the guys already good.....and he'll be highly-motivated against the hometown team that didnt draft him.

maybe he'll do a couple of spin moves around whats-his-name. you know, that absent DE that got drafted #1. Glad im a cowboys fan.
peace.

The stars of yore would be no match for today's players. And yes, I'm talking about Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, and all the other sanctified stars of the past. They were all great in their time against their contemporaries but if you were to put them in a Delorean and bring them to the present, they would look like skinny kids next to today's behemoths. Ah, you say, but what if the stars of the past were given all the advantages of present day training and "supplements"? Well then, that is a fun one to speculate on but that situation is so hypothetical that it makes any practical comparison virtually impossible.
