Conferences have been realigned and approved.

Under protest. Saint Paul will gladly accept all donations toward a travel budget.

I assume that you mean the outstate teams tend to be club and the metro area teams tend to be varsity? I think next year will be a better indication of whether there's really a trend; the outstate schools were slow to add club lacrosse, so it doesn't surprise me to see them a bit slow to jump on the Varsity bandwagon. If none of them go Varsity by next year, then yeah, that's probably a notable trend.

Nice to see Rochester go to two teams.

Its difficult for outstate teams to get varsity status from their respective schools because much of the budget would be travel for some teams. I know from helping with Mankato's team that we have seen some resistance from the AD's to recieve any funding for the team, also some teams are not allowed to play on their school's campus. This past year was the first time Mankato had stepped foot on the school's campus, in the past we have played and practiced at a Park about 2 miles south on 169. It will take time i think for these schools to pick the lacrosse team up as a varsity support, it pretty much takes the clubs to give their team dues to the school to help start them as a varsity team.

From a map you can also see that almost all the southern metro teams went MSHSL while the remainder of MBSLA teams are northern metro teams.

Explains how St. Paul is in a conference with Rochester/Mankato/Owatonna.

Anyone care to speculate on the reasons for more teams in the south going Varsity?

$$$, established programs, and dedicated lacrosse communities is my guess.

What about "Time"

I didn't get involved with lacrosse untill 1998 so this is just speculation...

But I know a Rosemount guy who played box lacrosse in hopkins in 199(2?) while he was a freshman in highschool.

Maybe lacrosse has been in the highschool level in the south longer?

What are the oldest programs in the state? I'd guess Hopkins, Cooper, Jefferson, Roseville, Eden Prairie. It would be interesting to see a list with program start dates and locations vs. whether they're going varsity.

Of course, this may just push the dollar question back one more level: maybe the areas with more money are more likely to start a porgram like lacrosse sooner.

I would think this, starting a team in the early days, is more the intitative of lacrosse Alums starting teams rather then a money issue.

Speaking of lacrosse alums.... it would be interesting/fun to see a coaching tree in MN.

Graff, Hellenack, Larson, Ayers.... coaching kids... who become coaches of kids...who become coaches of kids.....
Kind of the Bill Walsh to the West Coast offense....

Well here are the teams that played in 1999. How many of these are now MSHSL?

Cooper 5 - 2
Roseville 8 - 1
Eden Prairie 4 - 3
Hopkins/Rosemont 5 - 2
Bloomington Jefferson 6 - 2
Breck 3 - 3
Academy of Holy Angels 2 - 2
Mankato 1 - 4
Orono 1 - 6
Minnetonka 1 - 5
Edina 0 - 6

From what I've seen and heard, only Orono and Mankato will be playing as clubs this year. The others are already on the MSHSL list except Hopkins who I thought had already made the move.

The teams and records from 1999 to 2004 are posted at
http://www.mn-lacrosse.com/info_history_boys.html

Also, regarding the "state tournament" for MSHSL teams. If you look at football, as I understand it the MSHSL doesn't consider it the "state tournament" until the games played in the Metrodome which just includes the semifinals and championship games. The rest of the games are regional or sectional tournaments. I'm not sure if things would be similar with boys lacrosse but if it is, I don't see the 4 team limitation being such a big deal.

Aside from the fact that lacrosse is now official, its nice to see that teams actually have real jerseys, wear real lacrosse helmets, real lacrosse gloves, the goalies don't where full hockey gear, and kids are playing with sticks other than the laser high wall!

Boy we have come a long way in a short time!

It's approved.....

MSHSL to sponsor lacrosse tourneys

High school boys and girls lacrosse teams on Thursday were granted a state tournament sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. The action, taken during the league's board of directors meeting, will provide a MSHSL-sanctioned tournament for the state's 32 girls teams and 28 boys teams beginning in May.....
