Color coding cabs Muslim cabs in the Twin Cities. Nice.

Putting aside the obvious legal issues of discrimination - An increasingly large number of Muslims expect us to accept their laws/morals. Yet they don't seem to return the favor.

Anyone else think that if their religion truly interferes with their line of employment that they should pick another job?

By Tom Lyden

MINNEAPOLIS – In her bright pink hat, Paula Hare has found herself waiting on her stoop a lot lately, for taxi cabs that never come.

Not to avoid confusion, Paula even tells the taxi dispatcher she’s transgendred. But on three occasions when the taxi actually showed up, she says Muslim drivers have refused to give her a lift.

“This is more than just religion, it’s flat out discrimination,” hare said. “And we’ve got laws against that in this state.”

The city of Minneapolis says she’s right.

Of the nearly 2,000 taxis in the Twin Cities metro, estimates are as many as half the drivers are recent immigrants – many Muslim.

The culture clash is most apparent at Twin Cities international Airport, where two to three times a day, taxi drivers refuse a fare because someone is carrying a bottle of alcohol. Some drivers believe the Koran forbids it.

Soon, the airport will even color code the light bar above taxi’s to indicate those who won’t carry booze.

The next two links are about stories of Muslim drivers refusing to transport people:

This one is from the UK:

Muslim driver refuses drive unclean dog

This one is from Australia:

Muslim cab drivers refusing guide dogs and drinkers

Those stories should alert us to what is going to be happening all around the world, not only in the US.

This link which is not particularly relevant to the Muslim cab drivers, but it is of a major interest to all of us:

As businessmen, do these drivers not have the right to decide who they have as their patrons? Is this any different than the sandwich place in Philadelphia that required their customers to speak English?

In the case of not transporting booze, it is no different than choosing to refuse service to people not speaking English. They are both probably wrong but the legality is a little dicey. Refusing to drive a transgender person is blatant discrimination. Will Danny Glover rally to the defense of this woman?

Hypothetical: Evangelical refuses to pick up Hassidic (sp?) Jew because he does not accept Jesus as his savior...discrimination, right?

I believe the article hints at the fact that the cabs are regulated by the city so the drivers are as independent as you might think. In NYC, they are issued medallions by the city and most of the drivers are independent contractors working for the garage that owns the cabs. So I think that if the city says 'pick 'em up' then the driver has to comply. If the garage owner says the same or drive somewhere else, then the driver has the option to comply or quit the company. It's not the same case as Geno's Steaks in Philly. He owns the property and business lock, stock, and barrel so he can refuse service as he pleases.

What I find amusing, is folks walking out of the airport clutching wine bottles. You can't board the plane with the liquid, so it should be packed in luggage. Are the muslims asking people to open thier luggage for inspection?

I wonder what happens with the Hormel guys needs a lift and is packing pork?

My whatever are you talking about? You mean that breaking news stories on letting minors into bars on campus if they have decent fake IDs and the hidden camera they snuck into a University of Minnesota hockey team party didn't open your eyes to the fact that kids in college drink and misbehave? Obviously you don't know the pressing issues in the world today!
