Remember this little scandal the next time you hear some NFL blowhard going on about what a great guy Reggie Bush is and you will hear that plenty of that because of the way he has "embraced" New Orleans. Bush has had plenty of time, going all the way back to the question of where he was living in school, to come clean and apologize for these infractions. Had to look - Bush polled 2,541 points to capture the award over Young who polled 1,608 points and Leinart, with 797 points.

So the guy took some extra benefits (most of which seem to have gone to his family) and he is now a shady person? Are you telling me that you as a 21 year old would have been able to turn this stuff down? This is a pretty idealistic (and unrealistic) view, if you ask me.

Going beyond all this, BCS schools make such an unbelievable amount of money off of students who don't see a dime from it. I don't blame the kid for getting a piece of the pie. Weren't you the same person claiming that Minor League Lacrosse exploited college athletes? How is it different at a major football school?

This is yet another reason not to name a street/building/airport/etc... after a living person, particularly one that is in there early 20s.

After Tennessee won the NC in '98 (no really, i know it is hard to believe but the same coach that is leading the program into the ground, once lead America's team to the promised land), there was a call from some groups to name a street after Tee Martin, the UT QB at the time. It was later found the Tee Martin was taking money from a Mobile, AL sportswriter a la Reggie Bush.

So, if you agree to a scholarship and to certain rules, and then decide the rules aren't fair, you can do whatever you want?

Yes, colleges make money from athletics, but players get a free education, plus they get to play a sport they supposedly love AND they get the chance at a big payday from pro sports. If you don't like that deal, don't go to college and don't agree to comply with NCAA rules.

So, yes, Bush is shady. To me, people who say they won't do something and then do it anyway and try to hide it are shady.

He's typical of the rest of these athletes. Deny, deny, deny even when caught, then deny some more. The NCAA rules are not perfect but they are the rules and every NCAA athlete knows them so why should he get special treatment? My point was that he could have come clean the first time improprieties were brought out in public. God forbid he show a little integrity.

I presume that Bush was on a full athletic scholarship. How much does 4 years at SC cost these days? My undergrad cost $120,000 so a full athletic scholarship would be nothing to scoff at. Now, if athletes choose not to get their degrees or skip classes well then they are not getting the value of that scholarship but that is a different debate. My point about the Minor League Lacrosse was that players were not receiving anything in return for the services, i.e. an education, while the owners would reap the profits. At least in the big time football one could make the argument that money from the games goes back into the school, though I'm not prepared to go out on that limb without looking at some numbers.

I think—I don't have nummbers either—that what often happens is that the revenue from football and basketball support those sports (which have tremendous budgets in many cases) and subsidizes non-revenue sports (like swimming, track, fencing, and bowling—yes, they have NCAA bowling). I don't think very much, if any, money makes it back into the general university fund to, say, buy chalk or particle accelerators.[/code]
