Belmont Abbey (NC) Announces Recruiting Class for 2007

Belmont NC – Belmont Abbey head coach Rob Horrigan announced a group of 22 student athletes that will be attending Belmont Abbey in the fall of 2006. In this recruiting class there are twelve all-conference players and six team MVPs. The crusaders return a strong group that led the Abbey to a 6-6 record in their inaugural year.

The student-athletes comprising the Crusader class of 2008 and 2010 are Robert Bauwens (Ponte Verda Beach, FL), Miles Elliot (Annapolis, MD), Frank Gunsallus (Easton, MD), Douglas Homan (Manasquan, NJ), John Hunt (Charlotte, NC), James Joos (Commack, NY), Tristan Keas (Penn Yan, NY), Chris Kopitskie (Glen Burnie, MD), Billy Lamb (Charlotte, NC), Nick Matteo (Arnold, MD), Ryan Matthes (Sparta, NJ), Chris Mueller (Easton, MD), Tyler Norris (Charlotte NC), Mike O'Malley (North Port, NY), Matt Pine (Hauppauge, NY), Taylor Poschmann (Cold Spring Harbor, NY), (James Regan (Canandaigua, NY), Jim Ring (Davidsonville, MD), Mike Ring (Annapolis, MD), Matthew Roth (Baltimore, MD), Brady Stanton (Arnold, MD), and Evan Young (Arnold, MD).

Robert Bauwens is a 5'10" 172 pound defenseman out of Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Rob was named 1st team all district for lacrosse in 2006 and was named, best defensemen Nease High School 2006.

Miles Elliot is 5'11 170 pound midfielder who attended Randolph Macon Academy Front Royal VA He was named 1st team and 2nd team all conference his Junior and senior years. He was also named Team MVP his senior year.

Frank Gunsallus is a 6' Goalie out of Easton High School, in Easton MD, in his time at Easton Frank had 220 career saves...20 of which were in a single playoff game. Frank was named Defensive MVP by his team.

Douglas Homan is a 5'9 175 pound midfielder out of Manasquan High School, Manasquan NJ he has played other roles for the benefit of his team, for instance he played defense and goalie when asked. In his senior year he played middle line backer and wrestled at the 215 weight class. Doug has been named First Team All Shore, Offensive Player of the Year by his local paper, 2nd Team All State C - Division, and 1st Team All County.

John Hunt is a 6'2 200 pound midfielder from North Mecklenburg High School. During his junior year at North Meck, John ranked 3rd in scoring and in ground balls. During his senior year John remained the 3rd leading scorer on the team, but jumped to second place in team standings for groundballs.

James Joos is a 6' 200 pound defenseman from Suffolk County Community College, during his time at Commack High School he played on his football team at both the running back and defensive end positions. He was named all division and defensive MVP his junior and senior seasons In addition his senior year resulted in 4 goals 8 assists and 123 ground balls.

Tristan Keas is a 6' defenseman from Penn Yan Academy, Penn Yan New York. Tristan also played free safety for his high school where he notched 3 ints and 1 TD. In lacrosse he was named 1st team all league, and went on to play in the empire games, 05,06 and named to the all tournament team.

Chris Kopitskie is a 5'10" defenseman from Glen Burnie High School, Glen Burnie Md. Where he also played linebacker and tight end for his football team. Chris was a team captain and was named as all county 2006; as well as being named to the 2006 All-Star lacrosse game.

William (Billy) Lamb is a 6' attackman from the Cannon School, Charlotte NC. Billy was named Offensive MVP; from the Charlotte all state game. Billy was a team captain and was the team's statistical leader.

Ryan Matthes, 6'2 200 pound midfielder from Sparta High School in New Jersey. During his junior year, Sparta High School won their league for lacrosse. Ryan was named all league both his junior and senior season. During his senior year Ryan was honored as team captain. During his three years on varsity Ryan scored 44 goals and had 10 assists.

Nick Matteo a 5'9 155 pound defensive midfielder from Broadneck High School. Nick will come in as the statistically the strongest player pound for pound. Nick was the 2006 County Weightlifting Champion, 155 lbs. with a 270 lb bench press, 2nd overall strongest in Anne Arundel County High schools. Nick was named as a second team all county as a specialist, was named by the Washington Post as an Anne Arundel All County Honors - Defense (Honorable Mention

Chris Mueller a 5'10 165 pound midfielder from Saint Peter and Paul High School in Maryland. Chris played two years of varsity lacrosse for his alma mater. Chris is also an accomplished student, while also earning the distinct honor of Eagle Scout.

Tyler Norris is 6'5" 235 pound defenseman from Central Piedmont Community College. Tyler will brings a multi sport background to the Crusaders, including a pitcher in baseball and forward in basketball, he also started at defense for the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus' club team.

Mike O'Malley, 6'0 205 pound face off midfielder from Suffolk Community College. Mike played his High School Lacrosse at St. Anthony's on Long Island. During his time there he was a two time selection for his league. The Catholic High School Athletic Association. Mike also played two years of high school football at the Safety position.

Matt Pine is a 6'2 194 pound midfielder from Suffolk CC. He played is high school lacrosse at Hauppauge High School, New York. He was named all league for lacrosse. In High School he was also named all league for soccer and basketball.

Taylor Poschmann is a 5'10 200 pound attackman from Cold Spring Harbor NY. Taylor is a division 1 transfer from Wagner University.

James Regan, is a 6' 5" 215 pound midfielder from Canandaigua Academy, Canandaigua NY. James played in his senior all star game and contributed to his high school football team on both sides of the ball as a lineman.

Jim Ring a 5'8 165 pound attackman from Dematha Catholic High School. Jim helped lead his team to the conference title and was a 3 year letterman and all conference selection for DeMatha. To cap off his High School career Jim was awarded his teams "coaches award". Jim is excited to have a chance to play with his older cousin Mike, who is also new to the Abbey lacrosse team.

Mike Ring, 6'0" 185 pound attackman from Anne Arundel Community College. Mike played high school lacrosse at South River HS located just outside of Annapolis md. In 2005 Mike was named 2nd team All-Conference for Anne Arundel. In 2006, he was selected as a member of the First Team All-Conference. Ring was Offensive MVP both of his years at Anne Arundel. During his two seasons at AACC Mike scored over 90 points.

Matthew Roth a 5'11" 195 long stick midfielder from Essex CC. In high school Matt played for Cardinal Gibbons High school, Baltimore MD. It was there he played strong safety and middle linebacker for the Crusaders football team. He also earned significant lacrosse honors. He was named team MVP in 04, and was named as an MIAA C, all conference player.

Brady Stanton is a 5'10" 178 lb long stick midfielder from Broadneck High School, Arnold MD. Brady possess great speed, and foot work probably born from his Black Belt In Tae Kwon Do.

Evan Young is a 6'2 178 face off midfielder from Broadneck High school, Arnold MD Evan was named to Anne Arundel County All-Star team for lacrosse. He also led his soccer team as a goalie to a second place finish in the Maryland State championship and was named team MVP.
