The three Duke University students accused of raping a woman in March are not expected to stand trial before Spring 2007. Indeed, among the uncertainties surrounding the case is whether the trial will occur at all or whether charges will be dismissed.
Nevertheless, the preliminary debate that raged like wildfire through the media has changed society's frame of reference for viewing sexual assault cases. For some, the Duke case has changed how they view the criminal court system itself.

So without having to read 31 pages of thread, where is the Duke case at right now. I've been out of the country for the summer and Im alittle behind. Short and sweet would be nice.

Call adds mystery to lacrosse case
In the middle of a Duke lacrosse party where a dancer said she was gang-raped for 30 minutes, a call was placed from her cell phone to a Durham escort service.
The 12:26 a.m. call to the service, Centerfold, lasted one minute, according to a copy of her cell phone bill reviewed by The News & Observer. It is unclear whether the call was a request for another job, a cry for help or something else, or even whether the accuser made the call herself.

By JOEDY McCREARY
The Associated Press
DURHAM, N.C. - The district attorney prosecuting three Duke lacrosse players charged with rape acknowledged Friday that he erred by openly discussing some aspects of the investigation, but he urged voters not to judge him by one case alone.
"My handling of the media coverage of this case has occasioned substantial criticism, some of which is undoubtedly justified," District Attorney Mike Nifong said during a half-hour news conference.
"I both underestimated the level of media attention this case would draw and misjudged the effect that my words would have. That having been said, this case remains a Durham problem and it demands a Durham solution," he said.

Nifong Admits Some Criticism Justified
County Commissioner Lewis Cheek Will Not Pursue DA's Job
DURHAM, N.C. -- Mike Nifong is trying to reassure voters that he's the man for the job a day after a potential challenger said he won't pursue the district attorney job.
Nifong admitted Friday that there's some justification to criticism about how he handled the media with the Duke case.
"My handling of the media coverage of this case has occasioned substantial criticism, some of which is undoubtedly justified," Nifong said during a half-hour press conference. "I both underestimated the level of media attention this case would draw and misjudged the effect that my words would have. That having been said, this case remains a Durham problem and it demands a Durham solution."
Nifong said the election should be based on his 28-year career, not just the Duke lacrosse rape case.
"I understand someone is calling this the 'Anybody but Nifong' election, and I guess that goes with the territory," he said.
Lewis Cheek, whose name will appear on the November ballot challenging Nifong but who won't actively campaign, had criticized Nifong's handling of the case in which a woman told police three Duke lacrosse players beat and raped her at a party in March. The three players charged have denied the accusations.
Nifong also said there was evidence he hoped to have in the case, such as DNA, but that it didn't pan out.
"There were things we hoped to have in terms of evidence that we ended up not having," Nifong said.
