The link below is about Duke President Brodhead speaking about the lacrosse situation to the Duke alums at the Alumni Reunion. That was from April 22, 2006.

Somewhere between bumping Deep Purple and Jumbo clearing the crease?
PRICELESS.....But I dont remember Jumbo clearing the crease. Any chance on a repost? Heck...any chance on reposting both of them? I think that an important part of us all was lost with the old message board.
I never had a steady girlfriend like you, but I did get kicked in the balls once by a mule.

Duke's president is absolutely right and that is a very very good answer to probably the hardest question he has ever had to answer in public...he got my standing ovation.

While I keep trying to reserve judgement on this whole episode, I find myself appalled at the general loutishness of this lacrosse program. Here's an e-mail sent to Coach Pressler from a Duke graduate of 2003. It makes for some interesting observations about the lacrosse culture at Duke.
His comment about coaching kids "lives" has a lot of merit. The coaches I've admired have always been those who go beyond lacrosse and into other areas of a young man's life.
Coach Pressler,
My name is Tom Larkin, and I graduated in 2003. During my tenure was involved in numerous incidents with packs of frothing lacrosse idiots. Several members of your team at the time became my friends, but normally after I got in fights with them. You may remember me as the guy who was there when KJ broke his orbital after refusing to leave my house, or when Devin broke his hand trying to punch me in the face. Yeah that was me. I can even remember receiving the business end of a keg through my window, courtesy of a drunken lacrossse sophmore trying to earn his stripes. And who could forget Paul the retard throwing full beers in the air at tailgates, or Matt Monfett trying to piss on my couch. All the while I was wondering who encourages this behavior? How could a group of ahtletes be so reckless with their opportunities? What would posess someone to act like an asshole on such a consistent basis? Then it dawned on me.....the answer was you. In large part, you are to blame for the events that transpired the other night, and consider this (yet another) indictment of your character.
If you would coach lives, instead of wannabe hockey we wouldn't have this problem. It's ok, you're just not that good of a coach. You're a meat-head who happens to be able to attract young meat heads to play for you, thereby perpetuating a culture of brutish immunity that got your players in trouble today. Perhaps you have a penchant for the X's and O's, but you haven't taught these kids shit about acting like gentlemen. And that is what pisses me off. These are representatives of one the finest universities in the world, given an opportunity to get an education second to none in exchange for their time and dedication to athletic excellence. But instead of acting like humble, thankful receipeints of highly coveted scholarships, they act like drunken idiots, steamrolling their way from party to party ready to beat the crap out of the first guy that looks at one of them wrong. Then they're told excremental slogans like "there's only one fraternity on this campus L.A.X." to steak up their brains even more. Who says that, seriously? Douchebag.
I put the odds of you getting out of this clean around 600:1, but if that does happen, don't worry I've got plenty of good stories for Mr. Alleva. Thanks for creating an embarassment to our university, turmoil in our personal lives, and blistering our cache amongst employers.
Yours in Duke Blue,
Thomas E. Larkin III, Class of 2003

Finally some good news, although I find it a little surprising after reading that e-mail from the former player to the coach. Seems like "social irresponsibility" is an understatement for the team in recent years.

responding to the email to the coach: the author sounds more like the whiney neardy kid who never even tried to make friends. to call the sport of lacrosse, which, and please correct me if I'm wrong, is the oldest sport in the world dating back thousands of years to the native americans, wannabe hockey is a great disservice and shows his ignorance of our great game. I agree that coaches in general need to take responsibility for their team on all levels, including proffesionally. However the coach is not everywhere and to assume it's up to him to stop underage drinking is moronic. It sounds like the author of the email had plenty of partying himself. If he had such a problem with their behavior at his house, why did he not call the police? perhaps because he was misbehaving as badly as they were, but just did not have any friends.

that wasn't a former player.
talk about kicking a guy while he is down. I hope all of Mr. Larkin's potential employers google him and find this letter somewhere.
"broke his orbital" sounds like someone punched him.
I wonder if he sent a letter to the entire team's parents. "Coach Lives" is a cute phrase and something i'm sure every coach consciously or subconsciously does at some level, but you can't hold a coach accountable for every poor decision off the field.

I must have mis-read the e-mail, I thought it was a former player to Coach Pressler. And I don't hold the coach responsible for everything off the field. But the overall feeling I got from that (obvious bias) e-mail is that the team isn't the best role models off the field, for lack of a better way to put it. Nothing to do with the coach, but the committee's report seemed to discount the off-field actions of the team. I'm also not saying that their actions warrant the permenant suspension of the team, though. Without all the facts, I can't make that judgement.

Nifong vows to continue pursuing rape investigation
DURHAM, N.C. -- The district attorney prosecuting two Duke University athletes on rape charges fought off two challengers in the Democratic primary Tuesday and vowed to continue pursuing the headline-grabbing case.
"The case continues to go forward," said Mike Nifong, who insisted the election had not become a referendum on his handling of the investigation into rape allegations involving the school's lacrosse team.
