Should the 2 FSU D2 losses count?

Postby Bluevelvet on Fri Mar 17, 2006 10:48 pm

Two FSU multigoal losses, should they count?
The situation is really irritating. FSU plays no one and wins. They play a D2 team and get crushed. Now, they argue that the D2 team is better than all the MDIA teams so their miserable performance should not be a indicator of how they would do against a top MDIA team. Why shouldn't those games count? They don't play anyone else of consequence except #9 BYU.
How can FSU be judged if the the only decent team they play is a D2 team that beats them like a drum. The D2 games should count against FSU just like the no opposition victories count.
This is a typical take no chances schedule. They have a built in excuse for their losses but face no meaningful opposition to truly gauge their team.

Define they.

To date... FSU has already beat:
No. 13 Georgia Tech (by 3 goals)
No. 21 Michigan State (by 6 goals)

Still to play (ranked teams remaining)
No. 9 BYU
No. 11 Virginia Tech
No. 20 Chapman
Plus one or more ranked teams in the SELC championships.

I guess if they didn't go to California they didn't play anyone of consequence.

#11 & #13 -#21 are not exactly the movers and shakers of the MDIA. BYU is their only test other than the D2 games.
We're not talking a top 20 team here. FSU is a #5 team playing a #20 team schedule except for BYU and the D2 teams. So the 2 losses to D2 teams should count.
They don't have to come to the west coast. They could go to the Rockies or Michigan to play a top 10 team.

No, they should not count. Here's why:

Nobody else is going to play Post or Bryant this year.

Maybe if a few other teams played them, they could be taken into account, but until that happens, games like these can't accurately gauge FSU's actual place in the MDIA.

OK, FSU is playing around 5 top 20 teams, with a couple borderline close to top 10 teams. Assuming they win all said games, they show they belong in the top 10, right? Meaning they belong in Dallas. All thats left is seeding. Dallas will decide the rest. Just because they dont play any of the traditional top 10 powers isnt the end of the world.

Yep. pretty much. Virginia Tech? Michigan State? Wow, real world beaters there. Where is CSU, Michigan, or Utah on their schedule, let alone California teams?

Admit it. They have not and do not play anybody of consequence except BYU!

I love how a team 2 spots (No. 11 Virginia Tech) and 4 spots (No. 13 Georgia Tech) behind No. 9 BYU aren't of consequence... yet No. 16 Utah is.

Your logic is amazing sohotrightnow. Must be something in the water out there in California.

Irrespective of all that Sonny, the fact remains that they have scheduled only 1 Top 10 team. Most of the other teams in the Top 10 have multiple games scheduled, some who are playing virtually all of them. FSU's schedule just doesn't measure up and there's no sugar coating that fact.

I'm not a proponent of having the varsity games count one way or the other, however. The only team hurt by this in my opinion is FSU as they may not be as tourney-ready at the end of the season. Time will tell.

Hey genius, my logic is that Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech do not deserve those rankings!!! I think Utah is better than them!!! Good enough for you??? Can you follow that logic? Perhaps you should be questioning the pollsters' logic and not mine!

I saw Virginia Tech and they looked awful. They should be ranked in the 20-25 region if at all.

It has nothing to do with West Coast bias. Facts are facts. FSU has only 1 scheduled game against a Top 10 team. Their schedule is not that difficult. Other teams in the Top 10 have more difficult schedules, with the exception of Lindenwood (1) & Oregon (2). I would say the same thing about their schedules. How does the West Coast figure into this? Your point, if there was one, is totally irrelevant.

Its hard to build up a tough schedule if none of the west coast teams are willing to travel out east for some games. Why should FSU and VT have to travel out west every year? You think D1 schools like UVA make teams like denver and air froce come to them every year? The west coast teams dont really travel that far. Yes the west coast teams play a tougher schedule but you cant bad mouth the east coast teams bc they dont want to travel out west every year. FSU and VT have taken the right step at a tougher schedule by going out west, but its the west's turn to come out east.

My point was simply this:
Who is the real Florida St.?
The team that rolls through unranked and 10-20 teams?
Or the team that gets blasted by two D2 teams?

West coast; east coast has nothing to do with it, (except that the west (including the Rockies) has most of the top 10 teams. I acknowledge it is expensive to travel there from the east).
I have no problem with FSU being ranked. I just can't justify their #5 ranking and possible seeding with their schedule.
I merely proposed that their D2 games count in lieu of games against top 5 MDIA teams.
If FSU lost that badly to Colorado St or Michigan they would probably drop in the MDIA polls.
