How in the world did they get 2 men up? CSU had the ball, UCSB was doubling, and CSU got penalties on 2 guys? That's got to be a story in its own right...

I think CSU was already one man down.

You are correct, but I was assuming the penalty had been released since CSU was man down with over 2 min to go.

Granelli pulled a shot wide of the cage. SB got it back put couldn't get a quality shot off.

Final CSU 6 - UCSB 5.

About what you'd expect from these 2 teams. Another dog fight in a long series of them.

It was probably a good coaching adjustment to UCSB's new "False Sense of Security" gameplan.

Everyone saw what that did to BYU.

You do what you have to do to get the win. That's the bottom line. I'd do the same.

Didn't CSU graduate a lot at attack? This is all my theory in my head at the moment but maybe he doesn't think he has the guns to run n' gun like in the past?

Then again, this is Flip.......

Wish I was there

Postby Rudyfan on Fri Feb 24, 2006 12:04 am

Many thanks to Blue Velvet and Catlax man for their updates and commentary. Wish we could have been there. Sounds like the Gauchos held their own against another of the best in the country. I still think they'll be much more dangerous later in the year. But we couldn't be prouder. Kudos to Flip and boys for winning in a tough venue, the first home loss for the Gauchos in several years. Wish they could have played in the pit!

We'll be getting a phoned in update from #45 in a few minutes and we'll relate anything interesting from the "inside". Sure the boys are dissappointed, but it sounds like a much closer game than last year at the 1st Four.

Apparently a quick look at the scorebook had a telling statistic. If they read it right, SB only had 7 ground balls. Sounds pretty low, doesn't it? If true, that's your difference right there. Still a one goal game (big surprise there) from 2 top teams. Wouldn't be surprised to see these 2 teams meet again in Plano.

Game reactions

Postby Rudyfan on Fri Feb 24, 2006 1:40 am

The UCSB boys were naturally disappointed, but felt they held a very good team to 6 goals. When you hold a team like CSU to that small number, you should win the game. And the team felt they let one get away. I guess SB outshot the Rams, but missed on some close ones. Especially in the last few minutes, there were a couple just wide. My son thought they hit the goalies helmet with a shot.

That's something that they'll definitely work hard on, putting the ball past the goalie. My son couldn't believe that Luke Shaw was held scoreless. I guess he had some chances, just couldn't cash them in. The inexperience of the Gauchos shows more in their offensive execution than on defense at this point. He made a point though, that the CSU attack is unique, and hard to defense, and the young guys will learn from this game. He certainly felt that the Gauchos proved something tonite, even in a losing cause. They should be able to compete with anyone this year. The couple of games they'll have with Sonoma should be doozies!
