Training Video Ideas

Postby LaxRef on Wed Feb 01, 2006 9:11 am

The MDOC training committee is considering putting together a video which would help newer officials identify fouls. Much of the current training material tells you what to do once you identify a foul, but not how to determine what a foul actually is. As a first thought, I put together the following list. The idea is to highlight the most important fouls that occur 95% of the time, not the more esoteric fouls. The format would be a video clip followed by a text screen showing the "answer," so that the presenter could show the clip a few times, pause, start a discussion, and then show the answer. This format would keep costs down and allow us to cover more situations. Is there anything obvious I'm missing?

TECHNICAL FOULS

***Crease violations
Goalie clamps ball outside crease, stick checked by attack
Goalie clamps ball inside crease, stick checked by attack
Goalie has possession, goalie inside crease, stick outside crease, stick checked by attack
Goalie attempts pass from inside crease, attack interferes

Goalie has possession outside the crease, attack runs through the crease
Attack shoots ball, ball enters goal, then attack steps in crease
Attack shoots ball but steps in crease before ball enters goal
Attack dives across crease, ball enters goal, attack lands in crease.

***Push
From the front, with possession
From the side, loose ball
From behind, without possession

Push from behind where player loses ball; make clear this is not to be called a loose-ball push
Light push, no advantage
Light push, player goes out of bounds or into the crease
Push from front with one hand on crosse

***Hold

Possession, holding using the crosse
Legal hold from behind or side

***Illegal offensive screening
Legal screen
Screen where screener is late
Screen where screener is set but then leans to make contact with player
Screen where screener attempts to lean and make contact but no contact is made

***Warding
Legal play with stationary arm protecting crosse
Offensive player wards
Offensive player attempts to ward but misses
Defensive player puts stick under offensive player's arm and offensive player frees his arm

PERSONAL FOULS

GREAT IDEA. We struggle with this same topic each and every year when training new officials. I will post a few more common foul situations when I get the chance.
