Just like to point out that Iowa is 2-0 in the last two years over SEC teams in bowl games including a thumping of Danny's Gators. 3-1 in their last four bowl games with their lone loss coming to USC and Heisman winner Carson Palmer.

That is all for now.

And Iowa remains one single team in the Big 10 + 1 conference. ;)

The rest of the Big Ten doesn't get a pass because your Hawkeyes beat the SEC in bowl games twice in a row.

Oh, I wasn't arguing for or against the Big Ten. Just pointing out my Hawkeyes have done well as well as take a jab at Danny. I guess I forgot the emoticon to show I was joking.

Sagarin, May be right, I am offering my opinion. I believe that you take Texas and USC out of their respective conferences, and they are the WAC and Conference USA. After those two teams, the strength of their conferences are not that great. I like the way both USC and Texas play, i love watching their games. Both are very strong teams, but after them what do you have, Texas Tech and UCLA. In the SEC you have Georgia Alabama, Auburn LSU, Florida. ACC- VA Tech, Florida State, Miami. Big Ten- Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin.

I think it is a push between the Big 12 and Pac 10 as far as which conference is the best. I think USC and Texas will play a good game.

I will leave you with one question...

Would Texas have given up 42 points to Fresno State?

I guess we will see when they play A&M on Friday.

Wishing Va Tech and Marc Vick luck the rest of the way...

Hokie Hokie Hi!!!

Uh... Texas is Big 12 and USC is Pac10. You might have Texas confused with UTexas at El Paso, which is conference USA.

By the way, Texas Tech has been to a bowl game ever since EDIT: Mike Leach became there coach, and has only lost either 1 or none of those games. I wouldn't be quick to discredit them just because Texas rocked their faces. Tech is a good team; Texas is a much better team.

I'm confused by your post, first you say Texas' and USC's conferences have no depth, and then you say they are most likely the strongest conferences. Well which is it?

Last thing, in answer to your question. NO. Texas would never let Fresno put up 42 on them. Texas Tech beat A&M like 52-17, Texas should have no problem whatsoever. But then again, there's a reason they play the games...

I was saying that if you take Texas out of the Big 12 and USC out of the PAC 10, you aren't left with much more as far as quality teams go. I know that Texas is in the Big 12 and USC is in the PAC 10. I was just equivocating the rest of the teams in the Big 12 and Pac 10 to the WAC and Conference USA. I think that Both Conferences are equal in depth (it is a push-meaning neither conference is better). What I said is that Texas and USC are the best teams in the country no doubt, but after them the Big 12 and the PAC 10 don't offer much.

My post had a little sarcasm in it, sorry if it wasn't caught. If you read my other posts, you will find that I have somewhat of an Idea of what is going on.

I would never post again if i mistook Texas for UTEP.

Once again to clarify Texas and USC = best in college football.

Big 12 and PAC 10 = mediocre conferences this season.

It'll be another 5-6 season in Lincoln, and that would make me sad, but if they win another game they'll be bowl eligible, and then they'd go and embarrass themselves in some crappy bowl game. I don't feel like watching them get embarrassed by K-State, Colorado, and some other school in a bowl game, so 5 wins is enough.

What happened to the team I was describing in this rant? I think I said this earlier in the season, but I've never been so happy to be so incredibly wrong. It seems that when I praise Nebraska, they play poorly, and when I lose confidence in them, they make me eat my words, so I think I'm going to start ripping them to shreds in hopes that they'll keep playing well.

On another note, I thought A&M might have had a chance when they were only down by 8 in the 4th quarter, but they couldn't quite do it. Oh well, there's always the Big XII title game to try and shake up the polls.

That blocked punt was the nail in the coffin.

Colorado/Iowa State is not going to do anything to Texas. A&M was the last chance for someone to knock off Texas for the Rose Bowl.

Tomorrow's....today's Kansas-Iowa State has a lot of things going for it but will be such a boring game. Kansas is playing to be bowl eligible and Iowa State is looking not to lay another egg and let Colorado into the Big 12 Championship game for the second straight year.

The nail in the coffin was the muffed punt. Replays showed Carpenter recovered the ball, the officials had no clue and they didn't even review it. And that's a whole other argument, thats just an example of what Coach Stoops and others have been complaining about. But anyway, despite Texas missing the field goal it just took all the momentum away from A&M after scoring, then forcing Texas to punt.

Definitely right about that. Although the Big 12 Championship game seems to always be a trap game.

I didn't find it to be a boring game, but ISU definitely laid an egg again. I think McCarney has to go. He's done good with that program, but he just can't get the big win when its laid there right in front of them. A new coach might re-energize that team and help them get over that hump. Right now they just don't believe they can win a big game.

The game was much better than I predicted. I had watched Kansas-Kansas State earlier this year and it was one of the most boring games ever so I guessed that this would be around that level but luckily it was good.

As much as it's hilarious about what has happened to ISU (especially since I am a Hawkeye) the last two years, I don't think McCarney will go or really should go. He really has turned that program around. They used to be a bottom feeder and now they are at least competitive.

As Barry Switzer once said when getting the Dallas Cowboys job, what will you miss most about college football:

"Not having Iowa State on the schedule."

My bad, gotcha. Thanks for clarifying.

Like you said, I think there's such mediocrity with all conferences, its pretty difficult to rate the top teams when they're playing teams that are, at best, decent.

I'm just wondering what I'm gonna waste my time arguing about, minus lacrosse, after football season is all said and done with...

While I agree with you, JW, about the Big 12 this year, you need to be reminded that the Pac-10 has ranked teams in Oregon and UCLA, and other good teams in Cal and Arizona State (admittedly a disappointment in '05). Your opinion is shared by many others though. Remember that USC was denied the title game two years ago despite being ranked #1 in BOTH polls, and that last year Cal was denied a BCS bowl game while being ranked #4 -- mainly because a couple "homer" sportswriters from there in the Lone Star State dropped the Bears off their Top 25 ballots intentionally. You Texans sure do "have it in" for the Pac-10, it seems.

Guess we'll just have to let USC and Texas settle the matter on the field in January -- unless enough Texas poll voters manage to succesfully mount a campaign to keep the Trojans out of the game, that is!

Dan, I can't really disagree...

I will say a lot of the Pac-10 hating is our own fault. Teams that are good every 4 years, like the Cougs, will start winning games, become over-rated and make it into the top 5 at some point, and self-destruct. Then all the beating on each other the Pac-10 does is meaningless, and they all look bad. Hopefully USC won't self-destruct against Texas and they'll play a complete game. winning big.

As a Texas Tech fan, but in Cal's defense, the #23 ranking Tech had was mostly because it competed in the BigXII south with the likes of Oklahoma and Texas... as it still does today. But yeah, Cal got worked.

Dan W. : I agree that we Texans sure do have a certain bias towards the Pac-10, and I'm certainly not agreeing with such a bias. However, I think it comes mostly from the fact that both the BigXII and the Pac10 have had great teams ranked in the top 5 over the last few years, but there hasn't been many games to relate the teams to each other. What I mean is, the teams rarely have similar opponents thereby making it difficult to indirectly measure one team up to another.

new espn power 16

1 USC (19) 11-0 319 UCLA is No. 102 in total defense and No. 91 in scoring defense. The USC feeding frenzy starts Saturday at 4:30 ET on ABC.
2 Texas (1) 11-0 301 All the Horns have to do is beat Colorado in the Big 12 title game to reach the Rose Bowl. Hmmm, wasn't that the case in 2001, too?
3 Penn State 10-1 276 JoePa and the Nittany Lions will spend Saturday in front of the TV rooting for the Buffs and Bruins.
4 LSU 10-1 256 The Tigers can claim their 10th SEC crown and third this decade with a win over Georgia in the SEC title game.
5 Virginia Tech 10-1 230 The Hokies can earn their second straight ACC championship with a win over struggling Florida State on Saturday.
6 Ohio State 9-2 216 The Buckeyes will have to wait until Sunday to find out if they have been selected as an at-large team in a BCS bowl game.
7 Auburn 9-2 186 The Tigers aren't playing in the SEC title game, but they ended the regular season hotter than any team in the conference.
8 Oregon 10-1 185 The Ducks could be this year's Cal. Despite losing only to No. 1 USC, Oregon might be left out of the BCS games.
9 Notre Dame 9-2 181 After squeezing past Stanford on Saturday, the Irish can start thinking about their Fiesta.
10 Miami 9-2 131 "When you're kind of the ugly stepsister, you go to the prom with whoever asks you," said Larry Coker. That could be the Gator Bowl.
11 UCLA 9-1 118 With Drew Olson at QB and Maurice Drew at RB, the Bruins have the weapons to test USC. But can their defense hold up?
12 Georgia 9-2 100 The Dawgs won state bragging rights with a win over the Jackets on Saturday. They can add conference bragging rights with a win over LSU in Atlanta this week.
13 West Virginia 9-1 90 The Mountaineers have clinched the Big East and are headed to a BCS bowl. It will be worth tuning in to watch Steve Slaton and Pat White.
14 Alabama 9-2 53 We'd love to see Alabama's defense try to stop Texas Tech's offense if the two meet up in the Cotton Bowl.
15 TCU 10-1 40 The Frogs, who knocked off OU early in the season, will get a shot at another Big 12 team in the Houston Bowl.
16 Florida 8-3 9 The Gators lost three games in Urban Meyer's first year, but they did sweep rivals Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee.
16 Texas Tech 9-2 9 We're still trying to figure out how Mike Leach's high-scoring bunch lost to Oklahoma State this year.

Sorry that I had to bump this. Anyway, did anyone hear or read about a quote on Rodney Peete and his wife, Holly Robinson Peete? I read this morning that a sports writer made a joke about asking Rodney as to why he was rushing his wife to Mt. Sinai Hospital, not at UCLA Medical Center. Rodney was quoted as "I do not want no child of mine to be born at UCLA."

Needless to say, we all know that Rodney used to play at USC.

Update- I want to clarify the joke a little bit. I was able to sneak into my local newspaper's sports section and read the question asked of Rodney as to why he rushed his wife from the UCLA Medical Center to Mt. Sinai-Cedar Hospital. In fact, I checked out the www.imdb.com and did the "Name" search on Holly Robinson Peete and discovered that Rodney and Holly gave birth to a boy named Roman on February 25, 2005. Both have 4 children.

If USC and Texas win their final games to set up the anticipated #1 vs #2 Rose Bowl showdown, I'm sure many will use this to validate the BCS system as a success.

But we don't need a convulted system to create a "National Championship" for 1-A football when there is a clear 1 & 2 -- and only two undefeated teams in the nation. The BCS was created, supposedly, to create a national championship game when there are three or more undefeated teams or, heaven forbid the thought -- NONE at all. Imagine for a second that UCLA upsets USC and Texas loses the Big 12 Championship game. The BCS would be used to select two teams for the Rose Bowl after its standings are shaken up. I wonder who those two teams might be? Texas vs Penn State? Hard to say, really, but I know there sure would be controversy...
