Dreyers Ice Cream

Postby Brent Burns on Thu Aug 04, 2005 3:03 pm

Frankly, I don't buy Dreyers ice cream, but I found it amusing that the company is selling a special kind of ice cream called Aggie Blitz in a grocery store in Waco when I went out grocery shopping. I did not see any ice cream carton for the Longhorns or for the Bears or the Red Raiders, just for the Aggies. I am pretty sure the Aggies have seen that ice cream carton in the State of Texas.

I am just curious to see if Dreyers or any ice cream company do sell that kind of thing for an university or college in your home state.

After posting my original post, I went ahead and googled Dreyers.com and other sources. I found out that there is definitely Dreyers Ice Cream for the University of Texas called "Texas Stampede."

There was a story in 2003 from The Battalion, Texas A&M's newspaper in which it stated that a store called Albertsons had to plead for more Aggie Blitz ice cream because they simply ran out of them. There is a Longhorns discussion board where a guy bought 5 cartons of Texas Stampede, but this person of course would not sample the Aggie Blitz.

I am not aware of any Hawkeye Ice Cream but we got our own Hawkeye Vodka. Really disgusting/cheap stuff distilled in Marshalltown, Iowa that you will see many college-aged people buy, especially for tailgating.

Found this funny line in a Des Moines Register article talking about taxes and alcohol in the state:

Day handles a number of "value" products, including Hawkeye Vodka, the most popular vodka in Iowa - and one of the least expensive.

It actually depends on where you live- it would be either Dreyers or Edy's as both names are named after the founders of Dreyers and Edy's.

Apparently it is Edy's in Iowa but I don't remember ever seeing it. The popular ice cream in the state was a local thing:

Dean Buntrock of Waste Management gave stock to St. Olaf to build its Student Center. So yes our food service is in a building named for a guy who made money collecting trash. There is a story about him having someone develop a special Ole beer to sell in this building and building a bar in the student center. It was going to be the only place you could buy this beer. It was rejected since it conflicted with the alcohol policy of the school.

I believe Hagan makes the Pittsburgh ice cream. I know they have flavors for the Steelers and Penguins. They also make Pittsburgh Panther Paws for Pitt. I used to work in a dairy plant where they made it. A gallon of that stuff straight off the line is good for breakfast at six in the morning.

Alchol Policies??? That is a forgein concept. At SJU we have our own Brother Willies Pub. Not bad to have a bar on campus with 1800 kids. And who dosent enjoy a wet campus????
