LSA Playoffs, How Does it Shape Out?

LSA Playoffs, How Does it Shape Out?

Postby CP18 on Mon Apr 04, 2005 1:58 pm

The South is locked in for the playoffs. As of now:

Texas A&M is the top seed out of the south, and will receive a first round bye.

Texas State will play Tulane in the first round of the playoffs, with the winner going to the Final Four in Waco.

-----------------------------------
Current LSA A North Standings, Record Reflects games against North Opponents Only

[b]Texas Tech 2-0 (still to play UNT, Baylor and Texas)
SMU 3-1 (still to play UNT)
Texas 3-1 (still to play Texas Tech)
UNT 2-1 (still to play Tech, and SMU)

As we can see, the North can still go in a lot of directions. All we know is that the winner of Texas State and Tulane first round south playoff game will play the top seed out of the North in Waco, and that the Aggies will play the winner of the first round playoff game out of the North in Waco.

Should be interesting, with the trip to Blaine on the line.

LSU still in it

Postby Karl Lynch on Mon Apr 04, 2005 2:04 pm

CP18. I made the mistake of counting LSU out too early. They still can get the third seed in the South.

wow, this expanded play-off format will bring some new blood into the playoffs. What these teams do with their ticket to the playoffs is up to them. So, the top spot in the North looks like it is up for grabs if Texas can win against Tech. I am confused though, what happens in case of a tie for those last spots?

Head to head

Postby Karl Lynch on Mon Apr 04, 2005 2:16 pm

Head to head is the first criteria. That alone should sort it out.

Head to head record? Ahhh, I see . So hypothetically, If UT beats Tech they both only have one loss, (but UT is first seed because they beat Tech) Than if UNT beats SMU, but looses to Tech. UNT will advance because they beat SMU? Oh well, it would probably be easier if I just waited to see what happened, and forget the "what ifs"
thanks anyways, Karl
Regardless, I can't wait to see how some of these games play out. Wish I could be there in person. Good luck to all potential playoff teams, especially Unt, I love seeing late season pushes to make the playoffs. This is the part of the season, and the most heartbreaking for some teams.

My apologies to LSU. Therefore, the only two teams that have punched playoff tickets as of now:

Texas State = First Round playoff particpant
Texas A&M = Final Four participant

Is there going to be a discussion on how the LSA-B South division only has two teams remaining in it (considering Nichols is no longer playing for a playoff spot, according to the school)? This means that TU and SEU have automatic births. I am sure they are both more than deserving to go based on how their season turned out, but the North division is turning into a slobberknocker while they just waltz in. I am not saying we are getting cheated here, but shouldnt there be some sort of consolidation of the two divisions and have the top four go? This would probably require some sort of "emergency meeting of the high council" or something. Just curious.

Playoff Picture

Postby Karl Lynch on Mon Apr 11, 2005 12:23 am

South Div. A has two teams set.

Texas A&M #1 Seed
Texas State #2 Seed
#3 seed will be determined later.

Tulane v. LSU game becomes the game.

Tulane beats LSU. Tulane #3 seed.
LSU beats Tulane. Gets tricky. Break out the tiebreaker formula.

North Div. A is anything but set.

Tech is in with a 4-0 North Divison Record with one game to play. Their seeding is not set.
UT, SMU, and UNT are still in the hunt.

The what ifs:

Tech beats UT. Tech 5-0, gets #1 seed in North. UT has a 3-2 Division record.
UT beats Tech. UT has a 4-1 Division record. UT makes playoffs. Tech makes playoffs.

SMU beats UNT. UNT out of playoffs. SMU has a 4-1 Division record with the tie-breaker against UT, but Tech has the tiebreaker against SMU.
SMU win combined with a Tech victory over UT, Tech #1, SMU #2, UT #3.
UNT beats SMU. UNT has a 3-2 Division record with the tie-breaker over SMU combined with a UT victory, UNT makes the playoffs, SMU out. UT #1, Tech #2, UNT #3.

UNT beats SMU with a UT loss to Tech. Get out the tiebreaker formula because we have three teams with a 3-2 record.

Down to the wire in both Divisions.
