You are right. It should be based on location. Why would UCSB want to be part of a division where the majority of the games are 5 hours away when they can be in the LA division where the games are 2 hours away?onpoint wrote:I'm no WCLL'er, but my problem with this is that everything goes in cycles. Just because the LA division is strong now doesn't mean that in two years U of A, ASU, UCSD, and SDSU are all ranked in the top 15-20. It's not really fair to restructure the divisions based on skill level. If that was the goal, wouldn't it make more sense to restructure the playoffs to have just the top 8 teams regardless of division?

Alex makes a good point. The skill level of teams is certainly cyclical. Instead of viewing any change as a balancing of power, so to speak, I think you have to look at the numbers. Perhaps three divisions (north, central, and south) could be explored. This would change the playoff structure, but it could be a better way to balance the teams. I believe the SELC currently has this design.

I really like the 3 division idea.
A lot of this depends on what happens in the off-season...SJSU, UC Santa Cruz moving to D I? ...also heard grumblings that SMC may move to D II .

Just curious, but hypothetically how would you divide the teams into 3 divisions? I see the same problem arising. At least when I do it in my head geographically, I just end up lumping the current LA and South together and having a massive number overload in the new 3division South....

NoFlow,
9 teams in the south division, 9 teams in the central and 2 in the north!

This was the setup last year:
Division A: Quarterfinal Playoffs
Game 1- North #1 vs. Central #2
Game 2- Central #1 vs. North #2
Game 3- LA area #1 vs. South #2
Game 4- South #1 vs. LA area #2
Division A: Final 4s
Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 4
Winner Game 2 vs. Winner Game 3
So, if it stays the same, it would be:
Sonoma/Santa Clara v. Arizona State/UCSB in Semifinal 1
Stanford/Chico v. Chapman/Arizona in Semifinal 2
I'd say Chapman has a nice road to the finals if this is the setup.

These games are pretty easy to chose, but I like to do predictions any ways.
Santa Clara @ SSU: Sonoma does not lose very often at home, especially during playoffs. I haven't heard much about SCU this year, but I don't really see them being able to pull this one out.
Chico @ Stanford: After seeing bhsvideodad's Cal v Stanford video, I was not impressed with Stanford. But I have not been impressed with Chico either. So this goes to the #1 seed.
Arizona @ Chapman: This one is easy.
UCSB @ ASU: This is the best game of the weekend. When do two top 10 nationally ranked teams ever play each other in the quarter finals of league playoffs? I guess that only happens in the WCLL. It hard to beat a team like UCSB twice. Seeing how they played against Chapman two weeks ago, it's going to be a tough one for ASU to pull off. So I'm going to have to pick the Gauchos in this game. Then I will have a reason to make the trip to San Diego next weekend. Anyone going to be able to give updates for this game?

I'll give this a shot:
Santa Clara @ Noma - I'll take Noma in this one, but i won't count SC out. They're a pretty solid team and have good athletes with good sticks... i think it will come down to whether or not they can stop Sonoma on Defense. I still think Noma wins by 3 or 4 i'll say 11-8
Chico @ Stanford - Stanford is definitely much improved, but I have an inkling that Chico will show up for this one and give them a good game. I'll take Chico by 1 at 8-7.
Chapman by 1000Arizona @ Chapman: This one is easy.
UCSB @ ASU - I definitely agree that this will be by far the best game of the opening round. ASU has definitely been playing very well and pretty consistently all year. In their last game a few weeks ago in SB, the game definitely could have gone either way, and i have a feeling that if it was at the Pit SB would have come out on top. That being said ASU has a pretty serious home field advantage as well out in the desert. I'm going to give UCSB the edge based on their recent play against SSU, ASU and Chapman... I think this is their breakthrough game and could power them into the WCLL Championship game and an improved seed come tournament time.

Why would the seeding match ups (brakets) change this year?

It actually was not at the Pit it was played on the large open turf field adjacent to the Pit. Definitely not the same kind of home-field advantage with no stands and missing the kind of close-up fan interaction which you get at the pit.
