PNCLL DIV 1 Playoffs 2008

Postby Shawn Carman on Sun Apr 06, 2008 5:25 pm

With playoffs a month away and the season nearing the final stretch which teams playoff spots are in jeopardy? Who will go and who will stay? This is the up to date breakdown so far of the DIV 1 playoff outlook -

SFU: 5-0
Beat (BSU, UM, UW, UO, OSU)
Lost (NA)
Still plays: UI, WSU, GU

Oregon: 7-1
Beat (OSU, UI, WSU, UM, GU, BSU, UW)
Lost (SFU)

Washington: 3-3
Beat (BSU, GU, UM)
Lost (SFU, OSU, UO)
Still plays: WSU, UI

Boise State: 1-4
Beat (WSU)
Lost (GU, UW, SFU, UO)
Still plays: UM, UI, OSU

Montana: 4-3
Beat (GU, OSU, WSU, UI)
Lost (UW, SFU, UO)
Still plays: BSU

OSU: 3-3
Beat (UI, GU, UW)
Lost (UO, UM, SFU)
Still plays: WSU, BSU

Gonzaga: 2-4
Beat (BSU, UI)
Lost (UM, UW, OSU, UO)
Still plays: WSU, SFU

Playoffs this year are turning out much like the last few years with many tie brakers in place, however a lot can still happen in the next two weeks, does anybody want to predict the final four yet?

SFU 8-0 and Ore 7-1 are the top 2 seeds.

UW will be in the final four but their seed depends on how the other games play out.

The 4 teams travelling to Missoula for the Div I playoffs could be set on Apr 19 when BSU travels to UM if the Griz win.

A UM win over BSU means the following:

UW and UM are in (both 5-3) but their seeding will depend on the OSU vs BSU game. If OSU wins UM is 3 & UW is 4, if OSU loses UW is 3 & UM is 4.

A BSU win over UM and all eyes will be BSU vs OSU on Apr 26. BSU and UM would be at 4 losses. BSU will then need to beat OSU so that there is a three way tie at 4-4. And in this situation I believe BSU would get the 4 seed as they would have beaten both teams they could be tied with. If OSU wins the game vs BSU the Beavs would have a record of 5-3 and get the #3 seed with H2H win over UW.

UM is in with a win vs BSU, #3 or#4 TBD
BSU is in if they win their three remaining games, and can only realistically get the 4 seed.

The Broncos' loss to the Zags may come back to haunt them.

IMO the Griz will beat the Broncos on the 19th and we will know the 4 teams that will fight it out for the PNCLL Championship in Missoula in May.

can't a few UW losses drop them from a playoff spot? with OSU still looking to sneak in.

Even one loss next weekend to either WSU or UI will almost surely eliminate UW from the playoffs.

Yes if UW does lose to UI or WSU then the above computation does change. But I do not see UI or WSU beating UW even if the dawgs are down to 20 players.

Thank you for the extra motivation in what should already be an emotional contest for both squads.

As much as I love BSU's "sweet 16" I could definately go for at least 10 more of 'em.

ya, 13 isn't too sweet for us....maybe people will come out of the woodwork this weekend seeing as how it's Mom's weekend here and I'm sure those parents want to see where their money went.

Maybe the Huskies and Clan can catch the Elton John concert while in Pullman this weekend. . .

My guess is that neither team will be actually staying in Pullman. . .Mom's weekend is insane out there.

It is true, I have been trying to track down hotels in that area for our BSU vs UI game for a week now. There are no hotels in Moscow, Pullman, Lewiston, Clarkston, Cour deAlene anywhere near by.

Kind of a bad weekend to host a game for the team traveling to play in that area.

That's why I sent you an e-mail on January 10th about reserving rooms sooner rather than later because it was our Mom's weekend. We wanted games on that weekend because it brings larger crowds.

It sounds like everyone has already mailed in a W against UI this year anyhow so maybe you don't even need to travel...

SFU stayed in Lewiston, because they were proactive enough to book their rooms early. The Huskies, who waited until literally the last minute to find available rooms, wound up having to drive to north Spokane (up near Whitworth) after the game at Wazzou and then all the way back down to Moscow on Sunday morning. Brutal.

Regarding the D1 playoff scenario, all eyes are on Boise State now. If the Broncos win out they would capture the #4 seed and UW would #3, assuming SFU beats GU. If Boise loses one of their three remaining games they are eliminated. But if BSU upsets the Griz and loses to OSU, the Beavers would be #3, UW #4 and Montana would be eliminated -- provided that the Beavers beat Wazzou.

I tried to find a scenario where GU could capture the #4 seed by beating SFU, but the Zags can't win any tiebreaker that I can see.
