Liberty University looks to make the jump from DII to D1

Liberty University's men's lacrosse team is ranked in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association's Division II top 20 for the first time in program history, debuting at No. 20 in the recently-released preseason poll. The Flames ended the 2012 season at No. 25 in the final Nike/Inside Lacrosse Coaches' Poll after losing to eventual champion Elon in the Southeast Lacrosse Conference tournament semifinals.

"We've been picked as the No. 1 underdog in the MCLA," said third-year head coach Kyle McQuillan, who played for Liberty from 2003 through 2005 and revived the program in 2010. "Obviously, every year we're trying to add to what we've accomplished in seasons past."

In their final season of Division II play (Liberty will ascend the ranks and compete in MCLA Division I next year), the Flames want to go out in a blaze of glory.

Yes, why not. They have excellent facilities, they are NCAA DI in all other sports, including women's lacrosse, and the men's lax team is having a great year. They seem to have a bright sustainable future so no reason not to make the move.

I promise you that Liberty is ready to compete at the MCLA I level. That's a very good lacrosse team.
