Maybe they were not nominated by their coach?

The Elon coach nominated all of their starting defense, and most of their starting line-up. He tried to nominate Curt Simmons from Emory but was told that he could only nominate players from his own team. When they got to Atlanta they heard that some coaches had conspired to vote for each others' players. Was the all conference selections determined by the league with the coaches votes as an assistant? Or did the coaches voting decide it all?

The coaches votes alone decided the "X of the Year" type awards. The votes were tallied up and that was that. (Some coaches didn't bother to do this, including three teams in the north which I think explains why not a single player from the North received one of these awards.)

(EDIT)*I think this is probably where you heard grumblings of "conspiracy" in Atlanta. Since half of the northern teams didn't vote, all the big awards went to players from the central and south. I think knowing the full scope of the situation it's easy to see that the Central and South coaches didn't "fix" anything, the North coaches that didn't vote not only let down their own players, but the other teams in the North who didn't get their support in this voting.*

For All conference coaches didn't vote, they nominated. (Of course, some didn't bother to do this either.)

Then, a coach from each region was selected to submit a sample All-Conference roster with some comments and justifications of choices. (This was to make sure that every player in the league had a chance to be seen in live action by someone involved in the process.)

That was the total involvement of the "coaches", after that it was in the league's hands.

I will say this; As the selector from the North, the sample roster I sent in didn't look a whole lot like the final All-Conference awards. I'm not sure if that was because the other two selectors sample rosters looked vastly different or what, because I never saw anything besides the nominations and my very own sample roster.

(*It's pretty hard to conspire when you don't know what the other guys are doing.)
