PNCLL and officials

PNCLL and officials

I have debated with myself about broaching this topic on here, but decided to do so. In recent weeks I have watched the comments about officiating progress from downright nasty, to that of a positive nature.
This is very encouraging, and not entirely unexpected.

It is my belief that all officials make a valiant effort to adjudicate games in an equitable manner. Just like players and coaches, officials err. (Well maybe not coaches, that is just not allowed :) ) Often these errors occur early in the season when the rust is still on. New rules, new interpretations of existing rules, new positioning mechanics, and new officials also enter the equation. A new season for officials is very similar to teams adjusting to new players, a new coach, new plays, the graduation and ensuing loss of an outstanding player; it all takes a bit of time to click. Practise is not the same as a real game. Pre season work for officials is generally classroom discussion/instruction. It is quite different than actual game action, especially regarding reaction time.

In a continuing effort to improve the level of officiating, PNCLL now "sponsors" a Fall Tryout Clinic for newer officials. Officials who may need or want a refresher or to be evaluated are also invited to attend. This past October was the first of these ANNAL events. It was quite successful, and as a result PNCLL has 2 new officials. 5 others were given evaluations to assist them improve their game.

I think the more recent comments about the quality of officiating reflect more of "working the kinks out", than actual lack of skill, or any perceived bias. No matter what an official calls, 50% of the people will be in disagreement, and most of the recently posted venting is sheer frustration with made calls. It too is not unexpected. What IS most encouraging is the fact that comments are improving on both sides.

Again let me say that I am encouraged by both the positive comments about the officiating, as well as the skill level and sportsmanship of the teams I have observed so far this season. In these contests, teams have played hard, played well, not given up, have accepted with little or no protest, officials calls, and simply adhered to the tenant "control what you can control."

PNCLL teams have developed quickly and many of the players now display amazing lacrosse abilities. It is great to watch from the best seat in the house. I look forward to seeing more games, and enjoying the play. Keep it up, and send many teams to Dallas.
Thanks.
