Lacrosse fans want town to start fielding program

Davie offers many youth sports programs, and league organizers believe lacrosse would be a good addition.

Herald Staff Report

Davie is considering adding boys' and girls' lacrosse to its list of recreational sports programs.

Several coaches and supporters are presenting a proposal for a youth recreational lacrosse program for Davie athletes in kindergarten to eighth grade.

Davie's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Recreation Department want to determine residents' level of interest.

Varsity and varsity club programs now exist in Florida's high schools. Currently, there are 43 girls' and 38 boys' high school programs in South Florida.

The success of the high school programs depends on youth lacrosse programs that feed experienced players to the next level.

There are currently 14 boys' and 12 girls' middle school programs along with four youth recreation leagues in South Florida.

They are experiencing overwhelming success with more players each year. The Weston youth recreation program has been thriving.

Lacrosse is no stranger to Davie where Western High School and Nova High School field varsity club programs.

Other programs in the area include Cypress Bay High School, American Heritage, St. Thomas Aquinas, Archbishop McCarthy and South Plantation High School.
