DENVER – Former DU men's lacrosse standout Matt Brown has been promoted to assistant coach, head coach Jamie Munro announced today. Brown spent last season as a volunteer assistant coach and was a four-year starter for the Pioneers from 2002-2004.

"We are very happy to have Matt Brown join our staff as a full-time member," Munro said. "Matt is a professional player in both the National Lacrosse League and Major League Lacrosse and on the cutting edge of the sport. He is a team guy and has a unique understanding of our institution. Matt will have a big impact on the development of our players and our offense."

While at DU, Brown played 56 games and accumulated 137 points, the sixth-best total in Pioneers' history, and 113 goals, fourth on the DU's career goal list. As a senior, he was named First Team All-Great Western Lacrosse League at attack, earned Preseason All-American honorable mention honors and was named GWLL Player of the Week. Brown was a three-time Face-Off Classic All-Tournament team member. Brown was named the GWLL Newcomer of the Year in 2002 after leading the team in points and goals and was named to the All-GWLL Second Team as a junior.

"I am excited for the opportunity to help take this program to next level," Brown said. "We have a great core of players returning and an outstanding incoming class. Our goal is to make the tournament and with all the components we have, 2008 should be a fun and exciting season." Led by Brown, the Pioneer lacrosse program gained national attention, tying for the GWLL title in 2003 and 2005 and finishing with a then school-high ranking of No. 18 in 2005.

Upon completing his DU career, Brown was drafted fifth overall by the Arizona Sting of the National Lacrosse League, where he played in all 18 games and accumulating 40 points. Brown has spent the last two summers playing for the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse, recording 63 goals and 72 points. In addition to his coaching duties, which include working with the offense, scheduling and alumni relations, Brown runs Destinations by J&M, a property management company. Brown also has coached high school and club lacrosse in Arizona.

A native of Burnaby, British Columbia, Brown graduated from DU with a B.S./B.A. in finance marketing in 2005. He resides in Denver.

Agreed...great guy. He's been very helpful to our youth program. I fear, however, that Denver will have a very tough spring in the GWLL.
