Bruce Beall was a baseball guy, so he was more than a bit surprised the day his son came home and said he wanted to give up the game.

America's pasttime was too slow for fourth-grader Brock Beall's taste. Besides, all the cool kids at school were playing a new game. So, Brock turned in a baseball bat for a lacrosse stick.

"It was a huge shock," his father recalled.

That was six years ago. The shock wore off soon enough. These days the Beall family is part of a grassroots effort to establish lacrosse in Clark County.

That effort started at Kings Way Christian School in 2005. On the field, it has produced early success. This spring Kings Way - with players from a dozen high schools - went 14-1 playing against junior varsity teams from Oregon.

Now, under the Kings Way banner, the club is looking to make the jump to varsity competition. In 2008, Kings Way will play a varsity schedule against teams from Tacoma south. To prepare for that jump, the Kings Way coaches are running skills sessions on Friday evenings.
