I think UC Davis has a varsity women's lax team. Wonder if the men's club will get to play at this new stadium?

There has been a running joke among UC Davis football players for a long time now. Since the 1970s, someone has been promising them a new football stadium.

It was the UC Regents on Thursday who voted to make this joke a reality.

The regents approved the start of construction for the long-awaited $29.75 million multi-use stadium -- delivering the final go-ahead to begin a project many thought might never come. The multi-use stadium is expected to open fall 2006.

Last March, the regents voted to postpone the construction of all capital projects -- despite the fact that the stadium will not be built with state funds -- until California's financial situation stabilized.

A 1999 student referendum -- the Facilities and Campus Enhancement Initiative -- called for an $18-per-quarter increase in student fees to fund three capital projects. The first two, the Activities and Recreation Center and the Schaal Aquatic Center, opened last April and last winter, respectively.

The stadium will be on the southwest corner of La Rue Road and Hutchinson Drive in the health sciences district of campus, and will serve primarily as a football and lacrosse facility.
