Matt - to make things simple there was a lot of complication with cost and host sites or what not. It proved to be too much for most of the teams.

so is the tournament cancelled or is it now just mostly composed of non-"BIG XII" schools?

There are only 5 teams playing now: KU, K-State, Iowa State, Oklahoma, and Missouri State. I believe most of the other big 12 teams are getting together down in texas to play.
