Over other coaches’ objections, Lewisburg approves lacrosse

LEWISBURG — Now that lacrosse has become an official district sport in Lewisburg, school officials are hoping other area districts soon follow suit.
The Lewisburg school board voted Thursday night to recognize lacrosse as a sponsored sport for boys and girls, thus giving the high school teams a chance to compete against other PIAA-sanctioned squads.

The Lewisburg girls team will be eligible this spring, while the boys must wait until 2009 for PIAA affiliation.

“There are several other local club teams that are waiting to see what happens in Lewisburg,” said Doug Kissell, vice president of the Central Susquehanna Lacrosse Club, which proposed the sponsorship earlier this month. “Lewisburg is where lacrosse started in Central Pennsylvania, and we have helped start the teams around us. If we can lead the way with approval, hopefully it will make it easier for the other teams to follow.
