With the first game a couple weeks away......

The first GRLC game will be Feb. 11th when Missouri takes on Arizona in Tuscon. And the first Divison B game being Creighton vs. Harding on Feb. 19th, what is new or going on with each team? Of course, you don't have to reveal too much info  , but what is going on across the GRLC?

I can say from what I have heard from Iowa, they started practices last week with 30+ people which is more compared to past years. They also got the new next turf/turf 2/whatever you want to call it turf put in the Bubble. No more of the old school turf that caused the nasty knee injury to the one Missouri player last year.

Anything else going on?

SMS started practicing last week. We have a shorter roster this year, with more dedication then in the past, with our first game over a month away (March 5) we have plenty of time to get ready. Lots of freshman talent coming it. Looks to be a good year, hopefully with as much success as last year. Good luck everyone.

Illinois started spring practice Jan 18th when we returned from break. Our practices are regularly attended by 38 players, a little larger roster than previous years. Just starting to prepare for our first weekend of games in Iowa on Feb. 18th. I think everyone is pretty excited to get the season started.

Who are the veterans as well as new players on Illinois that will make an impact on the team that will attempt to dethrown Mizzou and the GRLC title?

Thoughts? Insights?

Brady, I am excited for the opening weekend of GRLC play in the Bubble. Games in the Bubble were so much fun and sort of mad I won't get to see it this year. Night games in the Bubble are so much better then day games. Also, Iowa-Illinois games are always fun (despite you guys kicking our butts the last couple years) because the Chicago kids get the chance to beat old teammates/high school foes.

Illinois has a good mix of senior leaders and younger players that should allow for a competitive and exciting season. Illinois returns seniors Jason Sutherland, Justin Hooper, and John Katsis who are all known in the GRLC by this time.

I still remember the Illinois/Iowa game from I believe 2000, where the girls soccer team had a game and they turned off the lights, but we kept playing, then they had some players carry off the goals while we were playing, it was a surreal event. I remember a girl from my high school was playing for Nothern Illinois that day and we couldn't believe what was happening. And to think club lacrosse doesn't have any pull over D1 soccer, who woulda thought. Just a funny moment, I remember our goalie when they took the goal, he was so confused.

That was the year before me but I heard about it. We had something similar last year during the Marquette-Missouri game we hosted. I was told by the guy incharge of scheduling that there was a football BBQ thing at 5 PM. Each week leading up, it changed to like 4:45, then 4:30 and so on. Then finally the game plays and then a Mizzou player went down with a nasty knee injury which required medical attention and putting him on an ambulance to get it checked out. This prolonged our time but then the football people incharge came in and were having a hissy that they were suppose to be there at 4:15.....I just laughed and told them we were suppose to have it til 5 PM, but apparently I have no pull Vs. Kirk Ferentz so the 4th quarter was sort of played quicker and the game ended in time, but we had to "stay and help" them set up since we overlapped onto "their time". Myself and a couple guys set like one table up then bounced out of there. I loved our football team back when they were 1-10, we could get away/do more back then.

Matt,

Ya ours wasn't so much a schedule overlap, as Illinois showed up an hour late because our then coach forgot to get the team a wake up call. I was staying with a friend instead of the team so I showed up 15 min early with the threat of a benching if i was late, I ended up being the only person there for the next hour or hour and a half, and everyone on Iowa kept asking me where our team was, ya not good times........
