The cool thing about lacrosse, says Dave Farrington, is it gets the best of three sports: For one, it has the physicality of hockey; two, it requires the finesse of basketball; and three, it needs the endurance of soccer.
Despite the hockey-like gear and (often) the use of a soccer field, Farrington says the sport is most similar to basketball.
Largely billed as the fastest game on two feet, lacrosse is also one of the fastest growing sports in the nation, popping up in towns small and large. According to US Lacrosse, the national governing body for men’s and women’s lacrosse, no sport has grown as much at the high school and collegiate level in the past 10 years.
For folks like Farrington, head coach of Port Angeles High School’s club team, the draw is easy to see. The players have a blast even if they’re losing, he says.
If you’re having fun, you’re successful; that’s our philosophy, Farrington says.
In Port Angeles, local lacrosse players have fun and win as well. Part of a four-team Olympic League, Port Angeles has qualified for the state championship three times and won once, beating Seattle Prep in 2001.
With the wealth of experience and success, Farrington is joining forces with the Clallam County YMCA to bring lacrosse to the youngsters.
