FARMER'S KORNER - After three long years spent building a program, it appears the Summit Lacrosse club is finally going to get a chance to test its product against the top competition in the state.
A Summit School District committee voted unanimously Friday morning to give the club a "pilot" year as an official - albeit self-funded - program within Summit High School's athletic department. This means the boys and girls teams would compete against other schools sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA). The only hurdle left now is approval from CHSAA itself, which SHS athletic director Gretchen Nies described as a "rubber stamp" procedure.
"It was unanimous," Nies said of the vote, "given the number of kids already involved in the sport, and the potential for growth in the sport."
According to Jay Beckerman, who served as the head coach of the boys high school team last year and helped lead the recent push for CHSAA membership, the club's current enrollment totals about 200 kids. Of that number, approximately 80 are of high school age (57 boys, 23 girls), 80 are of middle school age (60 boys, 20 girls) and 40 are elementary-aged boys and girls (second through fifth grades). This year marks the first that the club has offered a program for second- and third-graders.
