BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont has named Ryan
Curtis as its new men’s lacrosse coach. Vermont Director of Athletics Dr. Robert Corran made the announcement today. Curtis replaces Steve Beville who resigned on August 28th to become the men’s lacrosse coach at Division III Cortland State.
“We are excited to have Ryan assume the head coaching role in our men’s lacrosse program,” Corran said. “He brings tremendous experience as a player at every level of the game and all the attributes of a leader and coach. He has a bright coaching future ahead of him and I’m thrilled that it will be as a Catamount.”
"I am very excited to be here and this is a great opportunity for me professionally and for my family,” Curtis said. “Dr. Corran and Chris McCabe (Assistant Vice President for Athletic Marketing and Business Development) have been great and I want to thank them for this opportunity. Plans are in place for the team to succeed here and I am excited to get started.”
Curtis spent the last six years playing Major League Lacrosse for the Boston Cannons in Boston, Mass. He was named a MLL All-Star five times and named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2003. He was also named the team MVP on three occasions and was a three-time captain with the Cannons.
Curtis is a 2000 graduate of the University of Virginia and won a national championship with the Cavaliers in 1999. He was named a First Team All-American twice and was named the 1999 NCAA Defenseman of the Year. Curtis was also a two-time captain at UVA and was named to the 50th Anniversary All-ACC Team.
Last year Curtis served as an assistant coach for the Dartmouth College men’s lacrosse team. With the Big Green, Curtis was involved with practice preparation, team and individual drills and worked closely with the defensive unit.
This past year he was also a member of the United States National Lacrosse Team that participated in the World Championships and won a silver medal.
A native of Potomac, Md., Curtis earned a B.A. in religious studies and history from UVA.
