NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Bartolo Governanti, formerly an assistant men's lacrosse coach at Dartmouth College, has been hired as the new head men's lacrosse coach/rink manager at Merrimack College, as announced recently by Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier. Governanti replaces Ryan Polley, who recently resigned his post.
"As we continue to strive for excellence on and off the field we have added an individual that brings a huge amount of experience and professionalism to our head men's lacrosse program," says Frazier. "In short, Bartolo is a winner and his full-time presence in our department will continue our success in the program."
Governanti has had collegiate lacrosse coaching experience at five different institutions, most recently Dartmouth College. He has been an assistant with the nationally-ranked Big Green for the last two seasons.
"I am pleased and excited about the opportunity to lead the Merrimack Warriors and to compete for a national championship," says Governanti. "I look forward to joining Sean and the rest of the athletics department staff."
Prior to his post at Dartmouth, Governanti was the head coach at Elmira College (1998-2002), leading the school to its first-ever Division III postseason tournament and national ranking. He was an assistant coach at Washington College (1995-98) where he helped lead the squad to the 1998 Division III national championship and runner-up status in both 1996 and 1997.
Before his time at Washington, Governanti also had coaching stints at Maine Maritime Academy (1993-95) and Siena College (1993). During his coaching tenure, he has also had extensive experience in admissions, intramurals, and facilities.
Governanti graduated from Siena College in 1993, earning three varsity letters as a midfielder.
