Byrne Accepts Position at the University of Notre Dame

Manchester, N.H. (August 14, 2006) - Gerry Byrne has stepped down as the men's lacrosse head coach at Saint Anselm College, effective immediately, announced Ed Cannon, director of athletics. Applications are currently being reviewed for the position and will continue to be accepted.

"We thank Gerry for his hard work, enthusiasm and commitment to the Saint Anselm men's lacrosse program," said Cannon. "He has solidified the foundation of the program and his hard work has helped Saint Anselm men's lacrosse continue to progress over the last three years."

Byrne recently completed his third season as head coach of the Hawks as the team faced one of the most challenging Division II schedules in the nation, battling six teams ranked among the nation's top-10 during the season.

Byrne graduated Magna Cum Laude from UMass Amherst in 1986 with a degree in economics. He was a three-year letterman and an All-New England defenseman for the Minutemen in 1986. Byrne then earned his MBA from Notre Dame, where he also worked as defensive coordinator for the Fighting Irish.

He was inducted into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame - New England Chapter - in 1999, was an alternate on the 1998 US National Team, and was the 2001 New Hampshire High School Coach of the Year while at Souhegan High School in 2001. Byrne has remained active in his professional playing career, playing for six years in various cities. His latest stint has been over the past three seasons as a member of the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse.
