In the time-honored tradition of minor professional sports teams attempting to gain a toehold in the city, please welcome your San Francisco Dragons of the Major Lacrosse League.

The Dragons, an expansion team beginning play Sunday at Kezar Pavilion, will try to avoid the fate of so many failed San Francisco teams in various sports before them with names like the Demons, Freedom, Golden Gate Gales, Golden Gaters, Pioneers, Shamrocks and Spiders.

San Francisco's sporting graveyard is filled with headstones of teams that barely drew a breath before breathing their last. So what makes the Dragons any different?

"It's the fastest growing youth sport in the country, both on the boys' and girls' side of the game,'' said Chris Bulger, president of the Dragons. "We think our (sport) is a little different. The sport is about where it's starting to cross over from a niche sport into the mainstream. You have more kids picking it up.''
