You may have heard of the sport lacrosse before, or maybe you haven’t. Maybe you witnessed it being played somewhere but you didn’t know what it was or you saw it in a movie once.

Well, now it is in Long Beach thanks to some individuals like Glenn Styron, who helped start a college club in the mid-eighties at CSULB. “I knew lacrosse was way overdue in Long Beach; the interest was there, and before I knew it, with help from other coaches and interested parents, Long Beach Lacrosse was born,” says Styron.

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing youth sport in the nation. “Kids are magnetized to the game,” says Styron.
It’s considered the new “X” game in field sports. It’s a great way to add teamwork and aerobic skills to a school age athlete with its fast, fun, and furious action, and it’s a great complement to the fall soccer and football season.

Long Beach Lacrosse has been holding informal Sunday demo/clinics since August 2005 at Whaley Park with an average of 15 kids of all ages showing up. On Sunday, Jan. 29, a winter instructional league started. Kids spent the first 30 minutes elaborating on some basic techniques and then were split up evenly to play a regulation youth game.
“Everyone seems to have a great time,” says parent and observer John Reed.
