CUMBERLAND -- There was a time when Cumberland High School lacrosse players couldn’t get any respect, a time as recent as the last season when the boys lost only one of a dozen games while playing against other schools as an unsanctioned club team.
The girls team was even better, posting an undefeated record against Division I and Division II Rhode Island Interscholastic League teams they played last year.
As Kyle Mangano, an 11th-grader recalls, some schools, the local lacrosse players faced were more than willing to play Cumberland. Others just avoided the team.
But a Thursday night vote by the School Committee giving the boys and girls teams sanctioned varsity status had the lacrosse players walking the school corridors with a much different attitude Friday.
"Now our players can become All-State and go into the playoffs too," Mangano said.
