Sounds like Ward wants to play Summer ball? Hope I get the first pick this year!

Swarm forward is passing along his passion for lacrosse
BY Jim Souhan, Star Tribune

A favorite athletic cliché is "I love this game," but as money and pressure in pro sports increase, you don't hear that so that often anymore -- unless you happen to run into a member of the Minnesota Swarm.

The Swarm is the local representative of the National Lacrosse League, the purveyor of the indoor version of the game.

Last year, the Swarm capitalized on the Wild's forced vacation and averaged an announced 10,315 fans at Xcel Energy Center. This winter, they are 1-1, having drawn 8,024 to their home opener.

I am not a disinterested party when it comes to lacrosse. I played club lacrosse at Missouri and with the old Twin Cities team, and think it is the most fun you can have without a rental boat.

Believe it or not, I'm not alone. Lacrosse, as a participatory sport, is growing at a remarkable rate.

A recent Sports Illustrated article stated that the number of youth-league lacrosse players in the United States aged 15 and under is more than 186,000, more than twice what it was in 2001.

Hate to be a stickler here, but, since we play at a local high school, summer league rules prohibit possession or consumption of alcohol onsite.

Jim last played back when the games were held down by Lake Calhoun and the atmosphere was a little more relaxed. I also have fond memories of the Schell's and Summit on a warm summers evening.....

And don't forget the girls grilling on the side lines for the after game feast.

Ahh those were the days.

Are you going to e-mail Jim or Should I - inviting him back to play would be fun...

Perhaps Ryan W will be a captain.....

Rob,

I'll pair up with Ward. Just thought I'd get a jump on the next season there.

Lars,

I thought the description was hilarious actually. Anyone who's seen the Summer ball in the last decade or so knows the truth, that it's become quite competitive.

Sonny,

Sorry for the copyright violation, the strib tends to eat your linkys after a week or so.

Summer nights on the shores of Lake Calhoun...yep those sure were the days. Those cold post play Summits more than made up for the mosquitos and those back to back games in that Minnesota humidity.

Lars, Rob...it's been awhile. How are you guy's doing?
