It's official. Northern Region lacrosse teams will be competing for Virginia High School League-recognized state titles this spring.
At last Wednesday's monthly Northern Region Council meeting at Marshall High School, Oakton athletic director Phil Levine outlined the parameters of the boys and girls AA/AAA state lacrosse tournaments.
Previously considered "unofficial" due to a lack of VHSL sponsorship,
both state tournaments will be played from May 30 to June 3 and will include eight teams per tournament: three from the AAA Northern Region, three from the AAA Northwest Region and two from AA Region II.
"I think [the VHSL] saw there were enough schools, enough interest in the sport, they pressed to get it recognized," said Oakton director of student activities Phil Levine.
For each state tournament, the Northern Region tournament champion and runner-up will qualify. The third state qualifier will be the winner of the consolation (3rd place/4th place) region tournament game.
The state tournament is currently scheduled for May 30 (quarterfinals), June 1 (semifinals) and June 3 (finals). The site of the state tournament has yet to be determined.
