Hernando County (FL) starting up lacrosse club

BROOKSVILLE – Greg Longo has a vision of what the sport of lacrosse may one day become in Hernando County.

But first, the director of the newly-formed Hernando Lacrosse Club must start from the ground up.

The Florida High School Athletic Association does recognize, but does not sanction, lacrosse. No school in Hernando County has an official team.
“We’ve had kids coming to us saying they’re looking for this and don’t want to drive to Tampa to participate,” Longo said. “We’re going to do something to give these kids an avenue to play.

“…We felt by doing it this way, taking the kids from all schools, the kids will start to grow. Then the schools will have the participation they need and chose to bring it into their school system.”

Having just recently moved back to this area after six years as assistant coach at Apex High School just outside Raleigh, N.C., the former player at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania decided the county was ready for lacrosse.

He appealed to local schools, but ultimately found a partnership with the Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department.

The Hernando Lacrosse Club hopes to have at least one team in three different age groups: youth, middle school and high school.
