High school lacrosse team approved by board

Granting the longstanding wish of lacrosse players and coaches, the Springfield School Board voted Nov. 15 to approve establishing a boys' varsity team at the high school beginning next year.
The Springfield boys' lacrosse team will join a Suburban One league consisting of 18 other teams in three divisions and play its first games in spring 2007.
The 6-2 vote followed a recommendation from high school Principal Joe Roy and Vice Principal Mike Kell in favor of the team two weeks ago. Roy and Kell opposed a varsity team a year ago because, they said, it would drain talent from baseball and track.
At the school board's previous meeting Nov. 8, they changed their recommendation, saying that successful seasons had secured interest in track and baseball, and the interscholastic lacrosse league was growing.
Rich Selzer, director of the Springfield Boys Lacrosse Club, who addressed the board a year ago to request boys' varsity lacrosse, thanked the board members for their decision, as well as Roy and Kell for revisiting their recommendation.
