Another call for lacrosse

Boys lacrosse players and their parents packed the Upper Moreland School Board meeting room Tuesday night, again asking the board to create a high school team. And this time, they promised to pay the $20,000 in start-up costs.

However, their pleas went unanswered.

Board members, who last spring rejected the idea, did not say a word after some of the boys and their parents asked them to reconsider. Instead, they went on to the next item on the meeting agenda without comment.

According to Upper Moreland Boys Lacrosse Club president Bob Fattizzi, more than 23 of the boys who play for the 3-year-old club have gone out for the girls team at the high school.

"We didn't orchestrate this as a club," he told the board. "We have a number of 10th-graders who saw the writing on the wall, that they could leave this high school without a lacrosse program.

"It's time these boys have the same opportunity as the girls in our district."

The father of one of the female lacrosse players received applause after he also asked the board to start a boys team. "My daughter wants to play," Mark Gallagher said. "I dare say I don't want her out there playing with these kids.

"Do we tell them not to play? Do we tell the girls not to play?" he asked.
