Lacrosse has hit a point in the south metro where it’s no longer the up-and-coming cute little sport anymore.
The combination of hockey, football and even a little basketball coupled with hard-hitting, fast-playing and high-scoring games has made lacrosse popular.
There are high school teams in Apple Valley, Eastview, Eagan, Lakeville, Prior Lake and Burnsville and it’s close to becoming another spring sport sanctioned by the Minnesota State High School League.
Eagan’s Bob Felter saw a need for a lacrosse specialty store in the south metro and with his business partner, Jeff Hamill, he acted.
A few months ago they set up a store in downtown Rosemount titled “Dakota Lax” to serve the needs for those looking for lacrosse equipment.
Felter grew up in upstate New York in Syracuse, which is a lacrosse hotbed, so he was surprised how little was going on when he moved here and delighted when it took off.
“I grew up with it,” Felter said. “When I first got here five years ago it was fledging, but it’s grew to something much bigger.”
