Michigan State has an interesting turf field. Supposedly it was developed by the MSU turfgrass management program. What is unique about it is that it has to be kept wet. It actually has an underground watering system and they also spray it on very hot days. Kinda strange for an artificial turf field. Maybe Matt Holtz could fill us in on more details?

All field hockey turf fields are kept wet. They water them to keep the speed of the rolling ball down.

This is officially a field hockey field, and it was a turf specifically designed to maintain the moisture once wet. Another advantage of a wet turf is that it really cuts down on turf burns. The university (as noted by some of these picutres) hasn't watered the field yet this spring, and since we've had almost no rain, the turf burns are getting pretty nasty.

I thought it had something to do with maintaining the condition of the field - that it would dry up and blow away if it wasn't kept watered. So it's just a playability issue in regard to field hockey? Interesting.

Either way I would have expected that sharp official in the background to have asked that player to get the blood removed.

It was turf burn. We went through a whole roll of pre-wrap (was the best we had for covering this up quickly) for that game.

I think the whole field is just a giant piece of green Scotchbrite! Great for scouring pans as well as knees...
