Don't be fooled by all that snow on the ground.
In less than two months, teams will hit the practice field for the first high school lacrosse season under the sponsorship of the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
Needless to say, the inaugural season is starting to shape up.
The MHSAA says there will be 62 boys teams and 38 girls teams. Locally, Ypsilanti and Howell expect to have new boys teams this year when spring practices officially begin
March 14.
More growth is on the way, if the MHSAA has its way.
The MHSAA has taken the unusual step of forming two geographical matrixes for some of the newer programs.
Gabriel Richard, Lincoln, Saline, South Lyon and Tecumseh are in the Group B's South Division, which also includes Romulus, Hartland and Walled Lake Northern.
The North Division includes five Detroit-area schools: Madison Heights Bishop Foley, Grosse Ile, Harper Woods Notre Dame, Romeo and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett.
