HIGH SCHOOLS: With roots dating to the 1600s, lacrosse is slowly gaining a foothold in the mainstream of high school sports, including the Twin Ports.

A few years back Dan Heldt was surprised by something Brendan Shanahan said in a television interview.

Shanahan, of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, said lacrosse was his favorite sport.

"I said, 'Wow, here is a pro hockey player and his favorite sport is lacrosse.' It was something worth checking out," said Heldt, a Superior native who coached bantam hockey.
