S.I. in Colorado this weekend

St. Ignatius came out to Colorado this weekend, taking on perennial Colorado power Kent Denver and last year's state champion Fort Collins on Friday and Saturday. Kent won fairly convincingly (at least by the score) 10-6 and SI squeaked past the FC squad 6-5 the next day. Kent is probably the best team in the state this year, but I would say FC is a little down after last year. For reference, Kent shut out Fort Collins 6-0 on Wednesday before the SI game, making the comparing scores thing make some sense this time around.

I wish I could have got a chance to see SI, especially given that they are clearly the class of lax in Northern California. It looks to me like no one in CA has given SI a game this year and Kent is rolling through CO almost as easily right now. This game was a match-up of two of the best programs in the west, in my opinion. Anyone have any other knowledge of the games?

I'm pretty sure that the game was 5-5 at the half. From the reports, Kent did a good job of shutting down the SI offense, especially Roy Lang, in the 2nd half. The Kent goalie was reported to have had a great game in goal. Some people mentioned that the altitude may have played a factor, but who knows?

SI had just gotten up to #10 in the national Inside Lacrosse rankings prior to the Kent game. This was the first game that SI lost since 4/21/2006.

Here's a link to an article about the game on Westside Lax:

Here is a copy of a post from another forum:

Just got back from Denver. The Kent game was disappointing but considering the circumstances, the team played well. The flu bug hit the team the night before and many did not get much sleep on Thursday night. The first goal that Kent scored was a complete fluke as the player was spinning to change direction and the ball came out and went into the net. That kind of set the tone for the game. They played well to tie the score at half time but the altitude took a toll in the second half. You could really tell the effect it had on the players.Their decision making was not as good as normal and they seemed a step behind the entire second half. Kent was a very good team and deserved to win. All the SI players commented that they were good guys and can not wait to play them again. The rumor going around was that Kent will be coming out to the West Coast next year.

This is an excerpt from a post from a guy who reffed the game:

Two great teams, going toe-to-toe...i was thrilled to be out there and just trying to stay out of the way...SI was as advertised, an extremely high-skilled, always hustling, still hungry team (in every sense of that word) fighting for every face off and loose ball...all the credit in the world to Coach Angilly, his staff and the fans of SI...color me impressed....

all that said, Kent was that much better...truly one of the best school boy teams this state has ever witnessed....i don't know what else to say about Kent other than Nationally, in my very humble opinion (listening CCD?), they are vastly underrated.

FWIW, I traded emails with the coach of Kent, who is on the Outlaws' staff, and he thought SI was the best team they had played yet this season. I guess we Colorado folk don't see this as the upset that maybe everyone else in the West does, but certainly a ringing endorsement from someone who knows lax very well.
