19-year-old Western Michigan University freshman Joey Metzelaars died Wednesday in Holland, Michigan. Metzelaars played for the Western Michgan University Men's Lacrosse team during the Fall 2007 season. He declined a Spring roster position this season with the intention of joining the Spring team in 2009 after adjusting to college life. He is suspected to have died from bacterial meningitis, but an autopsy and follow-up laboratory tests were inconclusive in pinpointing the cause of death. According to a press release, the symptoms displayed by the student prior to his death were consistent with those of bacterial meningitis.
This is truly a sad day for the lacrosse community. Joey was a young man of tremendous class, maturity, and kindness. Please include the Metzelaars familty in your thoughts and prayers during this time of crisis.
